Gail E. Christie Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A molecular biologist and professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Dr. Christie also served as the graduate program director of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Curriculum at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) from 2003-2017. Beginning her career at the university in 1984 as an assistant professor, and subsequently an associate professor in 1991 and professor in 2003, her area of research expertise includes bacterial genetics and gene expression, RNA polymerase structure and function, transcriptional regulation, translational regulation, microbial genome sequencing, molecular genetics of bacteriophages, site-directed mutagenesis, recombinant protein expression and purification, and protein-nucleic acid interactions.

Completing a BA in Chemistry at the University of Chicago in 1973, followed by a PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University in 1978, Dr. Christie went on to complete a National Science Foundation (NSF) postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Biochemistry at Stanford University, a Seessel-anonymous fund postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, and an American Cancer Society senior postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley.

During her tenure, Dr. Christie has contributed numerous articles to professional journals including Virology, Molecular Microbiology, Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Journal of Bacteriology, and the Journal of Molecular Biology, has contributed chapters to books, and holds several patents in her field. She has been the recipient of research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the American Cancer Society. She is a long time member of the American Society for Microbiology, where she has served in a number of leadership positions for Division M (Bacteriophage) including Divisional Chair and Divisional Councilor, as well as Divisional Lecturer. She was also the recipient of a Vector Laboratories Young Investigator Travel Award granted by the ASM and has served on the ASM President-Elect's Task Force, Division IV Group Representative, and the Microbe Program Committee.

She has been included in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Locally, Dr. Christie is an active member of the planning committee for the CROP Hunger Walk in Richmond, VA, and has been a longtime member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Chesterfield, VA, where she chairs the Board of Missions and Outreach and has served on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Christian Education, as well as singing in the choir. Married to Herschell Scott Emery with whom she has had three children, Dr. Christie is active in local social justice initiatives and enjoys bird-watching, theatre, and genealogy.
