With decades of industry experience to her credit, Dr. McMeekin has been recognized as a botany and plant pathology professor emeritus by Michigan State University since 1997. Prior to this appointment, she worked as the professor of natural sciences at Michigan State University from 1981 to 1999 and as an assistant professor at Bowling Green State University from 1964 to 1966. Dr. McMeekin began her career as an assistant professor at Upsala College from 1959 to 1964.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. McMeekin pursued an education at Wilson College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in biology and chemistry in 1953. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Arts in botany at Wellesley College in 1955. Dr. McMeekin concluded her studies at Cornell University in 1959, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in plant pathology, physiology and bacteriology.

Beyond her efforts within the field, Dr. McMeekin has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She found much success with her written works, having contributed articles to such esteemed journals as Mycologia, Plant Growth Regulation, Mycology, Phytopathology and Plant Disease Reporter. Penning the booklet "Exploring the Ecology along the Red Cedar River" in 1992, she wrote many lab manuals, including "Ecology, Diversity, and Evolution" in 1993, "Science, Matter & Life" in 1977, "Heredity and Change" in 1977, "Approaching the Environment" in 1977, and "Integrated Studies" in 1974. Likewise, Dr. McMeekin was the author of "Fire Blight, Potato Blight and Walnut Blight" in 1992 and "Diego Rivera: Science and Creativity in the Detroit Murals" in 1985.

In addition to her primary trade, Dr. McMeekin remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. Previously, she maintained involvement on the board of directors for the Michigan Botanical Club. Furthermore, she was a member of the American Phytopathological Society, the Mycological Society of America, the Society for Economic Botany, the Michigan Women's Studies Association, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. McMeekin has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of American Women.
