With 50 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Rose has worked at the University of Minnesota as the Fesler-Lampert chair in humanities since 2001, professor of art since 1983, and as a faculty member since 1972. Prior to these appointments, he was an instructor at New Mexico State University from 1969 to 1972. Mr. Rose began his career as an instructor with the University of California, Berkeley, from 1968 to 1969.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Rose pursued an education at the University of Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1965. He continued his studies with a Master of Arts at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1967. Mr. Rose concluded his academic efforts at Lund University in Sweden, completing postgraduate coursework from 1967 to 1968.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Rose has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his academic circles. He has found much success with his creative works, having created a number of artist books including "Winter Book" in 1995, "Where Do We Start?" in 2003, "1018 W. Scott St." in 2005, and "Time Frames" in 2008. Likewise, he has contributed articles and photography to many esteemed journals, including: Library of Living Philosophers volume on Arthur C. Danto, Il Progetto, Places Journal, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Shepherd Express, Chicago Tribune and Art in America, among several others. Furthermore, he was the set designer on "Fool for Love" at the Cricket Theatre in 1985 and on "Circus" at the Theatre de la Jeune Lune in 1986.
From 1974 to 2017, Mr. Rose's art was featured in solo and group exhibitions at various institutions around the globe, including the Hirshhorn Museum Washington D.C., Central Academy of Fine Art, the Ping Yao International Photography Festival, and Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing China, The Beijing Film Academy, Beijing, China, The Timeless Gallery, Beijing, China, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Lund Konsthall, Lund Sweden, Gallery Lipanjepuntin, Trieste, Italy, Jock Truman Gallery, New York, Rosa Esman Gallery, New York, The Clocktower, New York, PS#1, New York, and the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, New York and Miami FL. His work is included in over 80 private or permanent collections, such as the Walker Art Center, The Housatonic Museum of Art, the Kronhausen Collection in the Museum of Erotic Art, the Minnesota Museum of Art, the Getty Museum and Research Institute and the Brooklyn Museum. Mr. Rose also served as a project director for "Works of Art in Public Places" for the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota in 1988. His work in public places includes design collaborations with Julie Snow Architects on three light rail stations, Minneapolis, Marine Education Center, Minnesota Zoo, American Lung Association, Target Center Minneapolis, Park St. Lofts, Springfield Mass, Coffman Memorial Union, and University of Minnesota.

As a result of his initial introduction to China in 2005 and his association with the Beijing Film Academy he began to take University of Minnesota students in the arts and humanities to Beijing with the intention of introducing them to a world of art and history that remained unfamiliar to most of his students.
Between 2005 and 2015 he arranged multiple trips to Beijing to provide opportunities for students and faculty from the University of Minnesota to collaborate on joint projects, exhibitions and symposia with students and faculty at the Film Academy. This exchange between Chinese and American students and faculty promoted cultural opportunities for Chinese students and faculty to come to the United States as well. Mr. Rose was able to fund this program through generous support from private donors interested in cultural exchanges, art and education.
In 2014 he applied for, received, and directed a multi year (2014-18) collaborative research grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to fund a program to explore the developing world of contemporary Chinese art. Collaborating with several colleagues, the proposal: Mapping Transitions through the Vehicle of the Arts, was conceived and constructed as a loose consortium of schools and institutions in the cities of Minneapolis, St. Paul and the region with academic and artistic programs in the study of Chinese culture, history, arts and literatures, with the intention of forming a collaborative link between their individual programs to reinforce the whole through building on the individual strengths of each.
Mr. Rose has now established a travel and research fellowship for graduate students in the Arts and Humanities: The Rose Travel Fellowship in the Arts and Humanities for Creative Research in Asia, named in honor of University of Minnesota Art Professor Thomas Rose, who began a collaborative travel exchange program for arts and humanities students with the Beijing Film Academy in 2005. Professor Rose believes fervently in the transformative power of experiential learning and study abroad at the international level.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Rose has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. In 1993, he was recognized as an Arts Mid-Career Fellow with the Jerome Foundation, residence fellow with the Bellagio Center Residency Program with the Rockefeller Foundation, grantee with the Minnesota State Arts Board and traveling fellow with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. He was honored by the McKnight Foundation as an artist fellow in 1982 and 1997, a research fellow from 1993 to 1996, and a photographer fellow in 2002. Additionally, he was an individual artist fellow with the National Endowment for the Arts in 1976 and 1982, a traveling fellow with the Dayton Hudson Foundation and the Jerome Foundation in 1990 and 1995, a Fellow of the Minnesota State Arts Board in 1979 and 1984, and an artist fellow with the Bush Foundation in 1979. A Diverse Visions Grantee with the National Endowment for the Arts in 1995, Mr. Rose was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in America: Student Version, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
