Professor emeritus of language and communications, Mr. Deahl retired from Eastern Wyoming College in 2013 after teaching at the college for 18 years and serving as the chair of arts and humanities for 19 years. A former teaching assistant and lecturer at the University of Wyoming before accepting his first position at Eastern Wyoming College, he also taught English and theater at the Campbell County School District I in Gillette, WY.
Mr. Deahl's earlier years were spent in radio. Beginning as a sophomore in high school, and throughout the course of the next 14 years, he also hosted a morning edition for KUWR Radio in Laramie, WY, and did some television weather work. Returning to college in 1981, after already obtaining an Associate of Arts at Eastern Wyoming College in 1974, Mr. Deahl completed a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in English literature at the University of Wyoming in 1982 and 1985, respectively. Upon the completion of his master's degree, he primarily taught English. He also had the opportunity to explore the mortgage business while teaching.
During his academic career, Mr. Deahl contributed short stories to various professional publications and was a co-editor for the literary journal "Westering" for three years. A past president and longtime book discussion facilitator for the Wyoming Humanities Council since 1998, Mr. Deahl was also known for his time spent as a summer theater instructor and director at the Chadron State College/Post Playhouse in Nebraska in 1985 and as a part-time instructor at Sheridan College in Gillette during the late 1980s. Locally, Mr. Deahl served eight years on the Wyoming Community Development Authority, a state housing authority, which was appointed to him by the governor. During the last two of those years, he served as chairman. In 2018, he began serving as a commissioner of the Wyoming State Parks and Resources.
A former member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the Wyoming Writers Inc., the American Association of University Professors and Jaycees, where Mr. Deahl served in a number of roles, he was honored by Jaycees with a Speak Up, Movin' On Award in 1977. Included in the seventh and eight editions of Who's Who in America and the 27th edition of Who's Who in the West, he has been married to his wife Catherine Rose Large since February 1986 and has two children. In retirement, Mr. Deahl enjoys fishing, hunting, gardening and woodworking.
