Walter Benenson, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    EAST LANSING, MI, June 07, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Walter Benenson, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Benenson celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. A University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University since 1997, Prof Benenson was associated with Lyman Briggs College since 2001. Before that he worked at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, where he was twice the Associate Director. Beginning his career in academia in 1963 as an assistant professor of nuclear physics at Michigan State University (MSU), he taught on campus for 54 years. Recently, Dr. Benenson was honored by being named one of the 100 Most Important Professors at MSU, which was showcased at a kiosk in the middle of the campus.

A visiting fellow at the Australian National University, visiting professor at the University of Grenoble, and visiting lecturer at the Institute for Nuclear Science in Moscow and in Riken, Japan, during his tenure in academia, Dr. Benenson also did consultant work for the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, participated in multiple professional conferences as a member of the nuclear science advisory committee with the U.S. government, and contributed multiple articles to professional journals, magazines and newspapers. He also served as the associate editor of "Physical Review C" and was the lead co-author of "Handbook of Physics" in 2002, a veritable toolbox for rapid access to a wealth of physics information for everyday use in problem solving, homework, and examinations. The book not only includes the fundamental formulas of physics, but also experimental methods used in practice. Notably, Dr. Benenson is an elected fellow of the American Physical Society, where he served as chairman of the sixth international conference on atomic masses in 1979, and was a member of the executive committee in the division of nuclear physics.

Dr. Benenson locally served on the board of directors for the Happendance Dance Company during the 1990s and has been the director of the Yale University Alumni Schools Committee since 2004. He is active with several avocational organizations as well, including the Lansing Sailing Club and the Golden Key Honor Society.

While pursuing a degree in English at Yale University, Dr. Benenson had taken a physics class and wound up changing his major after the professor had told him that he was one of the brightest physics students he had ever had. Changing his major during his junior year of college, Dr. Benenson went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1957 before completing a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin in 1959 and 1962, respectively.

A National Academy of Sciences fellow in 1974, Dr. Benenson has been the recipient of an A.V. Humboldt Senior Scientist Award by the Federal Republic of Germany Government in 1988 and an Eminent Scientist Award from Riken, Japan, in 1997. Highlighted in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World, he was also honored for having a television program aired on PBS called "Nucleus Factory," which appeared worldwide. Married to Antje Semsrott since December 1969, Dr. Benenson has two children and two grandchildren.
