With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Willis has been recognized as physician emeritus with the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, LA, since 2004. Prior to his retirement, he served the institution as a pathologist since 1973, director of anatomical pathology since 1976, and vice chair of laboratory medicine since 1996. Earlier in his career, he worked as a pathologist with St. Mary's Hospital in Roswell, NM, from 1972 to 1973, and as a pathologist with St Luke's Hospital in Houston, TX, from 1971 to 1972.

Dr. Willis was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by his family who founded the Willis-Knighton Health System. He entered Centenary College of Louisiana, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in biology, math and physics. He then entered Tulane University and earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1964. He completed an internship and a residency in pathology with the Louisiana State University Medical Center from 1964 to 1969, and was certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. Following his dream, he was awarded a fellowship with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY, from 1969 to 1971. With family considerations in mind, he moved to New Orleans, LA and joined Ochsner Clinic Foundation to be nearer to home.

A respected leader in his community, Dr. Willis has also volunteered with numerous organizations. He is a board member and the president of the Dormon Foundation, which aims to preserve land and diverse native plants, and he is a former president and board member of the Louisiana Native Plant Society. He is a former chair of the capital building campaign and the administrative board of the Munholland United Methodist Church, and a former board member, vice president, president, and chair of the capital campaign of the Jefferson Performing Arts Society. Since retiring, Dr. Willis has focused his time on growing native plants and timber on his family farm, and he enjoys scientific and nature photography.
