A State University of New York (SUNY) distinguished professor in the department of oral biology and pathology at Stony Brook University for the past 45 years, Dr. Golub is an expert in clinical and research periodontics. He has taught second- and third-year dental students and participates in research alongside his master's degree and PhD students in his research laboratories. During his tenure, Dr. Golub served as the associate dean for research in the school of dental medicine for 10 years from 1993 to 2003 and as interim dean from 2008 to 2009. He was recognized as a SUNY Distinguished Professor in 2003.
Named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2017, Dr. Golub is an innovator in the development of medicines that promote oral health and treat chronic inflammatory diseases. He holds 55 U.S. patents and 104 international patents, largely related to his discoveries and development of therapeutic medications as inhibitors of tissue-destructive enzymes called the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). These novel medications have shown evidence of efficacy in a variety of oral and systemic diseases, including periodontitis, dermatitis, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular and lung diseases. His work for the past 50 years has received continuous federal research grants that have totaled nearly $15 million in the United States and Canada. He has also authored and coauthored more than 300 scientific articles in various dental, medical, pharmacology, and biology journals. Furthermore, he has served as a guest editor of the journal, Pharmacological Research, and has served on the editorial board for the Journal of Periodontology, the "Journal of Periodontal Research, and the Journal of Dental Research.
Dr. Golub became involved in his profession after graduating from the University of Manitoba with a DMD in 1963. Completing an MSc in Oral Biochemistry two years later at the same university, he then completed a fellowship certification in periodontics at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine in Boston with support from the National Research Council of Canada. It was during this time that Dr. Golub became very invested in research.
Recognized many times with national and international honors, Dr. Golub has been named a Distinguished Faculty in the Center for Biotechnology by the NYSTAR Center for Advanced Technology in 2009, received an Outstanding Inventors Award from SUNY Research Foundation in 2002, the American Dental Association Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Research in 2006, and won an Annual Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Biology from the International Association for Dental Research in 1998. He was also the recipient of an honorary MD from the faculty of medicine at the University of Helsinki in 2000 and an honorary DSc from the health sciences center at the University of Connecticut in 2018. Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Dr. Golub married his wife Bonny Golub in 1964. He has two children and four grandchildren.
