With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Leatherman has been a professor in the department of earth and environment at Florida International University since 2009, simultaneously serving as codirector of the school's International Hurricane Research Center laboratory for coastal research. Prior to obtaining these roles, he served as director of the center from 1997 to 2009, and as a professor from 1991 to 1997. From 1983 to 1991, he was an associate professor with the University of Maryland, having been an assistant professor since 1981. He was an environmental scientist with the US Geological Survey from 1980 to 1981, and with the Department of the Interior Barrier Island Task Force from 1979 to 1981. Earlier in his career, Dr. Leatherman was director of the research unit of the University of Massachusetts from 1976 to 1981, and an assistant professor with Boston University from 1975 to 1977.
Dr. Leatherman began his career as a student at North Carolina State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science, with honors, in 1970. He then joined the United States Army, serving until 1972, subsequently earning a PhD from the University of Virginia in 1976. Dr. Leatherman is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Geological Society of America, and Sigma Xi.
A respected voice in the field, Dr. Leatherman has written extensively in his areas of expertise. He is the author/editor of 20 books and National Academy of Science reports including "Barrier Islands from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Gulf of Mexico," "Barrier Island Migration: An Annotated Bibliography,", "America's Best Beaches," and "Dr. Beach's Survival Guide: What You Need to Know About Sharks, Rip Currents, and More Before Going in the Water." In addition, Dr. Leatherman is coeditor of "Sea Level Rise: History and Consequences," and he has contributed numerous articles to professional journals.
Throughout his career, Dr. Leatherman has been recognized for his contributions. He has been recognized with the Flame Award, the Ignite Gold Ribbon, the CASE Communication Award, and the Ignite Spark Award by Florida International University, who have also given him the Golden Key, two Research Professor Awards, Best In Class, and an Excellence in Faculty Scholarship Award. The University of Maryland has given him two Certificates for Outstanding Accomplishments, among their Honored Faculty, and the Presidential Citation for Scholarship, the Climate institute has given him an Environmental Hero Award, and North Carolina State University named him to the Blue Key honor Society for Excellence in Scholarship.
Dr. Leatherman received the Golden Azor for his documentary "Vanishing Lands," which also garnered him a Golden Eagle from CINE, and First Prize for Science at the Ekofilm Festival. He was a finalist for the John and Cynthia Mitchell International Prize for Change and Sustainability, he was named among the Outstanding Young Men of American and Personalities of the South, and he won the Russell Award in Coastal and Marine Research.
Dr. Leatherman has been featured in numerous honors publications, including the Dictionary of International Biography, the International Biographical Center Men of Achievement, and the American Men and Women of Science. He has appeared in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the East.
