Dr. Gujavarty has been an associate psychiatrist-in-chief and clinical director at the Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, NY, since 1989 who is also affiliated with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook as a member of the senate since 1998 and associate professor of clinical psychiatry since 1992. Teaching on campus since 1981, Dr. Gujavarty also completed his residency in psychiatry at SUNY between 1977 and 1981. He is an emeritus chairman at Good Samaritan Medical Center, where he served between 2002 and 2017. In addition, he was also in private practice in Pamaru, India, between 1974 and 1976 and a house physician in surgery at the French Polyclinic Hospital in New York City between 1976 and 1977.
Currently on the New York State Board of Medicine alongside a great group of disciplined doctors and active at Stony Brook, where he is conducting an ongoing lecture series called Values in Leadership, Dr. Gujavarty recently accepted a teaching position at an area medical school in St. Lucia, which he will be doing in the winter months. A former medical director of sleep disorders medicine and former director of affective disorders medicine at the University Hospital at Stony Brook and longtime associate attending since 1989, Dr. Gujavarty also continues to serve as a consultant in the special diagnostic, treatments and research unit at the VA Medical Center in Northport, NY, and in the community services division at the Kings Park Psychiatric Center in New York since 1989. He is a former medical director of People's Nursing Home and former member of the Long Island Regional Office Task Force on Violence in Mentally Ill.
A lecturer and presenter in his field, Dr. Gujavarty has contributed articles and reviews to various medical journals over the years. He is an elected fellow and longtime board of directors of the Suffolk district branch of the American Psychiatric Association, longtime member of the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, the Association of American Psychiatrists of India and the American College of International Physicians and a domestic violence task force member of the American Medical Association. Locally, he is affiliated as a lifetime trustee of the Telugu Literary and Cultural Association, and he has been a fundraiser for the democratic candidates of Long Island, NY, since 1988 and volunteer with Hope Ministries in Port Jefferson, NY, since 1992.
The recipient of several grants during the 1980s and 1990s through the National Institute of Mental Health, Organon Laboratories, Mead Johnson Pharmaceuticals, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, among other organizations, Dr. Gujavarty also received a Julius Marcus Award for Teaching Excellence by the Nassau County Medical Center in 1990. He has been cited in 25th edition of Who's Who in the East. First studying at Andhra Loyola College in Vijayawada, India, between 1963 and 1966, Dr. Gujavarty later completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at Karnataka University in Belgaum, India, in 1974. He is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners.
