Dr. Langenberg retired from academia in 2002 after 12 wonderful years as the chancellor at the University System of Maryland in Adelphi, MD. Enjoying multiple high-level positions during his tenure, he formerly served in the same capacity at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1983 to 1990 and was vice provost for graduate studies and research from 1974 to 1979. He also spent 16 years at the University of Pennsylvania. Hired in 1967 as an assistant professor in the physics department, he worked his way up to director of the laboratory for research on structure of matter from 1972 to 1974 and full professor until 1983. Dr. Langenberg briefly taught at the University of California, Berkeley, for one year beginning in 1958 as well, and was an electronics engineer at Hughes Research Laboratories in Culver City, CA, for two years beginning in 1953.

Researching and contributing publications to various academic journals on solid state and low temperature physics, Dr. Langenberg specifically focused on electronic band structure in metals and semiconductors, quantum phase coherence and nonequilibrium effects in superconductors, science and education policy and research administration. He also devoted a lot of time to working with other institutions. He served as deputy director for the National Science Foundation, was a guest researcher at Zentralinstitut for Tieftemperaturforschung with the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften and Technische University in Munich, Germany, visiting professor at California Institute of Technology and master conference associate at École Normale Supérieure in Paris, France. Furthermore, Dr. Langenberg served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society. He is a longtime member of Sigma Xi.

Receiving a Significant Sig Award from Sigma Chi in 1985, Dr. Langenberg also earned a Distinguished Achievement Citation from Iowa State Alumni Association in 1984, Distinguished Contribution to Research Administration Award from the Society of Research Administrators in 1983, and John Price Wetherill Medal from the Franklin Institute in 1975. He has been showcased in every edition of Who's Who in America between 1987 and 2014, as well as many more editions of Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.

Dr. Langenberg earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Iowa State University, Master of Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. He also received an honorary master's degree and doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, honorary doctorate from the State University of New York, and honorary doctorate from Gallaudet University (alma mater of both his parents).
