He also earned the NASP Gene Zara Award as a National Team Member for outstanding contributions as the principal reviewer of airframe and engine contractors' CFD efforts, as a valued spokesperson for the Program, and as an advisor to the Joint Program Office. This NASP experience assisted him to prepare the first draft of Guide for the Verification and Validation of Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Computational Fluid Dynamics Committee on Standards. Another career highlight was serving on the Joint Army Navy NASA Air Force (JANNAF) Interagency Propulsion Committee, where Mehta advocated for and created the Modeling and Simulation Subcommittee (MSS). He also developed and edited a simulation credibility guide presenting state-of-the-art approaches for verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification. He was awarded the Special Service Award in recognition of tireless leadership and boundless enthusiasm as the first chairman of the MSS Technical Steering Group and the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of over 30 years of outstanding leadership and technical contributions to the JANNAF Airbreathing Propulsion and Modeling and Simulation communities.
Dr. Mehta holds a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, as well as a Master's degree and a Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He affiliates himself with the AIAA and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. In recognition of his professional standing and outstanding contributions, the AIAA promoted him to the grade of Associate Fellow. He has authored or co-authored numerous conference and refereed papers on subjects including simulation credibility, access to space systems, CFD, and magnetohydrodynamic assisted hypersonic airbreathing propulsion; contributed to books such as the Handbook of Fluid Dynamics and Fluid Machinery, Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion, and Knowledge Based Problem Solving; and presented in SpaceNews policy and strategy commentaries on transportation systems for medium-weight payloads between Earth and low-Earth space.
