John N. Helbert, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. John N. Helbert was recognized as a tenured professor of chemistry at Maricopa County Community College District and Arizona State University in 2015.

Recently retired, Dr. Helbert was recognized as a professor of chemistry at Maricopa County Community College District and Arizona State University in 2015. Prior to his academic career, he worked in the field as a process engineer in the semiconductor product sector for Motorola in Phoenix between 1980 and 2001. Dr. Helbert also excelled as a research chemist in the electronics technology and devices laboratory for ERADCOM within the U.S. Army in Fort Monmouth, N.J. between 1975 and 1980.

Dr. Helbert notably served in the U.S. Army on active duty between 1972 and 1975. Following this post, he completed service as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve between 1976 and 1997. During this time, Dr. Helbert also held the designation of commander for the 627th Mobdes Unit between 1994 and 1996.

A former co-chairman, advisory board member and session chairman for various professional conferences in his field, Dr. Helbert was also certified by the board for the College of Chemistry for the Maricopa County Community College District and Arizona State University. He has since begun serving locally on the TOA as a board member in 2018. A consultant in his field for many years, he has been a member of several professional organizations as well, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, the Electrochemical Society and the American Chemical Society. Additionally, Dr. Helbert has maintained involvement as a longtime member of the Reserve Officers Association and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society.

The author of several engineering books, Dr. Helbert most notably penned "Handbook of VLSI Microlithography: Principles, Tools, Technology and Applications" in 2001, with subsequent revised releases in 2005, 2008 and 2012. The handbook gives readers a close look at the entire technology of printing very high resolution and high-density integrated circuit patterns into thin resist process transfer coatings, including optical lithography, electron beam, ion beam, and x-ray lithography. The book's main theme is the special printing process needed to achieve volume high density integrated circuit chip production, especially in the dynamic random access memory industry. In addition to his books, Dr. Helbert has contributed multiple scholarly articles to peer-reviewed journals throughout his career.

Holding numerous patents in his field, Dr. Helbert obtained several awards from Motorola, including a Motorola University Teaching Award in 1994, the Motorola Gold Quill Award in 1992, the Motorola Silver Quill Award in 1980 and the Motorola Science Achievement Award in 1982. He earned several awards for his military service, including a 1997 U.S. Army Meritorious Service Award in 1997 and a Research and Development Achievement Award in 1979. Dr. Helbert has been selected for inclusion in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and the 20th edition of Who's Who in the West.

Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Helbert accepted a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at Arizona State University in 1968. Following this accomplishment, he garnered a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry in 1972 at Wayne State University. Dr. Helbert later graduated with a Master's degree from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1987.
