Kenneth Andersen was inducted into the Central States Communication Association Hall of Fame in 2008 and was awarded the Tacey Award from the American Association of University Professors in 1998.

Dr. Andersen has essentially built his professional career at two universities: The University of Michigan 1961-1970 moving through the ranks of Instructor, Assistant and Associate Professor and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign moving through the ranks of Associate Professor to Emeritus Professor since 1995. At Illinois he served in such roles as associate head of the department of speech communication, associate dean of liberal arts and sciences, and deputy vice-chancellor of academic affairs. He served in faculty governess roles: chair of the Senate, chair of the University Senate Conference, and chair of the faculty advisory to the Illinois Board of Higher Education. He has held intermittent positions at the University of Colorado at Boulder, 1955-56, Army Education Center at White Sands 1956-58, University of Illinois at Chicago, Spring 1966, and University of Sothern California, Spring l968.

Dr. Andersen attended college at 17 years old, and was very inspired by his teachers. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern Iowa in 1954, graduating magna cum laude. He then received a Master of Arts from the same institution the following year. He went on to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin in 1961, where he also received a Knapp Fellowship. He later became a member of the board of visitors of the Defense Information School from 1983 to 1996, and the treasurer of the State University Annuitants Association from 2000 to 2004. He has also served as a consultant for the American Society for the Alexander Technique since 2013.

Dr. Andersen was an editor for publications such as Speaker and Gavel and the Journals of the American Forensic Association and the Central States Communication Association. He has also authored a number of textbooks as well as contributed articles to many professional journals. He was inducted into the Central States Communication Association Hall of Fame in 2008, was awarded the Tacey Award from the American Association of University Professors in 1998, and received the Distinguished Service Award of the Speech Communication Association. He served as Executive Secretary and President of Central States Communication Association, and president of the Association of Communication Administration and National Communication Association. He is listed in the third edition of Who's Who in Entertainment and the first edition of Who's Who in the Media and Communication, as well as numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the Midwest.
