Vaughn Grisham, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Grisham is a professor emeritus in the department of sociology at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. A tenured educator for 55 years, he was also former director of the McLean Institute at the University of Mississippi between 1985 and 2016. On campus, Dr. Grisham's research has focused on the modeling process of community development in small, rural towns and their successful results, which has been explored through his community development leadership training.

Obtaining both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in history and sociology from Mississippi State University in Starkville in 1959 and 1961 respectively, Dr. Grisham went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in history and sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1968. He has also been certified as an economic developer and a workshop facilitator for Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

A consultant of leadership and community development for many years, Dr. Grisham has been recognized for having helped establish leadership programs in more than 300 counties and has also completed community development work in more than 30 states and two Canadian provinces. With a career that stems from decades of experience in the field, he has been able to successfully help other leaders through each step of problem-solving and project evolution. In fact, communities throughout Mississippi, the Appalachian Region and the nation have implemented Dr. Grisham's community development principles to help revitalize their local economies.

In addition to his career, Dr. Grisham served as a track leader at the Brushy Fork Annual Institute at Berea College in Kentucky and a lecturer at the State of Alabama Intensive Economic Development Course. Locally, he participated as the director of long-range planning for the city of Oxford, Mississippi, and served on the Mitchell County Transportation Board in North Carolina. He is also the author of several books, including "George McLean: The Life, The Leadership Lessons and The Legacy" in 2018. Dr. Grisham also authored a leadership manual called "Link 2000" for the Southern Growth Policies Board and has contributed multiple articles to various peer-reviewed journals in his field.

Honored several times for his teachings, Dr. Grisham notably received the Elsie M. Hood Outstanding Teacher Award in 1978. He also received the Frist Service Award from the University of Mississippi, a Mississippi Trailblazers Dr. Robert C. Khayat Distinguished Award for diversity and racial reconciliation, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alabama-Mississippi Sociological Association. He was also the first recipient of the John B. Stephenson Service Award from the Brushy Fork Institute at Berea College, Berea, KY, and the first recipient of the Vaughn Grisham Award, given to a non-resident for service to the community of Morrilton, AR and the county of Conway, AR, among others. In light of all of his accomplishments, Dr. Grisham has previously been included in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America.
