Joseph J. Delfino Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Getting his introduction to academia while serving as a captain in the United States Air Force, Dr. Delfino taught at the US Air Force Academy as an instructor, assistant and associate professor of chemistry between 1968 and 1972. Upon leaving the Air Force, he became a section head and then technical manager for Nalco Environmental Sciences in Northbrook, Illinois where he remained for two years. He then joined in 1974 the University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty in the positions as an Assistant Professor Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the States Laboratory of Hygiene as Section Head of Environmental Health Sciences. He progressed through the tenured ranks of Associate and then full professor of CEE. He also served as Associate Director of the Wisconsin Water Resources Center during 1977-78. He then accepted a position in 1982 as Professor of Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida.

During his 32 year tenure at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida starting in 1982, Dr. Delfino taught many different courses in environmental engineering sciences (EES). In 1990, he was appointed as Department Chairman of EES, a position he held for 10 years. In 1999, he returned to full time faculty activity but was then appointed as Interim Chairman during 2002-2003. During his service as a faculty member in EES, he was also an affiliate professor of chemistry starting in 1990 and affiliate professor of natural resources and the environment in 1994. In 1995, he also served as interim director of the university's Howard T. Odum Center for Wetlands and Water Resources. He formally retired from the University of Florida in 2014 and currently serves in various capacities as professor emeritus.

An expert in water quality chemistry, Dr. Delfino served during 1998-2002 as the regional vice president for North America of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations' Committee on Technology. He was a member from 1978 to 2008 of the committee that approves the reference text Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater and during 1987 to 1990 was also a part coordinator representing the American Water Works Association. Furthermore, Dr. Delfino served on several state committees, including the mercury technical advisory committee and the total maximum daily load technology advisory committee for the State of Florida's Department of Environmental Protection.

Dr. Delfino authored and served as the co-originator and chief technical advisor for the award winning documentary film "The Florida Water Story" which premiered on PBS in 1989. He was also the associate editor for the Journal of the American Water Resources Association during 2004-2012. He has notably contributed over 100 peer reviewed articles to various professional journals on the topics of water chemistry, environmental science and engineering. Several of those articles have been cited over 100 times by authors of other journal articles since their dates of publication.

An elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Water Resources Association, Dr. Delfino is a lifetime member of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors and is currently a Board Certified Environmental Scientist and member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. He is also a lifetime member of the American Chemical Society and represented the University of Florida on the Universities Council on Water Resources (UCOWR), for which he served in various capacities including the Board of Directors. He shared with the production staff the UCOWR Public Service Award for "The Florida Water Story" TV documentary film.

Dr. Delfino has been showcased in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. He earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1963, a Master of Science in chemistry from the University of Idaho in 1965 and the Doctor of Philosophy in civil and environmental engineering and water chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968.

Dr. Delfino is married and he and his wife Dorothy have two adult children and five grandchildren.
