Dr. Jerry Lee Hatfield serves as a laboratory director at the United States Department of Agriculture-Agriculture Research Service within the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment.

Dr. Hatfield has found success as a laboratory director at the United States Department of Agriculture-Agriculture Research Service within the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment, formerly known as National Soil Tilth Laboratory, since 1989. Located in Ames, Iowa, the Agriculture Research Service is the USDA's chief scientific in-house research agency whose responsibility is to find solutions to agricultural problems that affect Americans every day from field to table. During his tenure with the USDA-ARS, he also served as a plant physiologist between 1983 and 1989, an acting deputy associate director between 1997 and 1988 and a scientific quality review officer between 2005 and 2006. Dr. Hatfield formerly excelled for eight years as a biometeorologist at the University of California between 1975 and 1983.

Writing and contributing to countless professional publications over the years, Dr. Hatfield contributed on the editorial board of Climate Change, the Journal of Agricultural Sciences, Weather and Climate Extremes, Pedosphere and Agriculture and Environmental Letters. He is the founding editor of Agrosystems Geosciences Environment launched in 2018 He was also an editor for dozens of other publications, more recently including "Agroclimatology: Linking Agriculture to Climate" in 2018, "Food Security and Climate Change" in 2018 and "Improving Modeling Tools to Access Climate Change Effects on Crop Response" in 2016. Furthermore, Dr. Hatfield has authored and co-authored approximately 450 refereed articles for peer-reviewed journals.

An elected fellow of the Soil Science Society of America, the Crop Science Society of America and the American Society of Agronomy, where he served in various roles, Dr. Hatfield also maintained involvement with numerous other organizations. He was the chair of the agriculture and forest committee and a member of the agricultural and forest meteorology committee for the American Meteorological Society, the program chair and board director for the Soil and Water Conservation Society and a longtime member of the American Geophysical Union and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Dr. Hatfield notably obtained an Agronomic Service Award in 1999 and President's Award in 2015 from the American Society of Agronomy, a President Leadership Award in 1998 and 2005 from the Soil and Water Conservation Society, a Presidential Award in 2005 from the Soil and Water Conservation Society and a Nobel Peace Prize from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007.

The recipient of multiple other awards during his tenure, Dr. Hatfield has been honored with several technical paper and presentation awards, a Hugh Hammond Bennett Award in 2016, a Midwest Area Outreach, Diversity and Equal Opportunity Award in 2015, a Midwest Area Outstanding Laboratory Director Award in 2014, and a Presidential Rank Award in 2014 and 2017, among others. However, his greatest recognition was in 2014 when he was inducted to the ARS Science Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame has only recognized roughly 100 people to date for creating a positive impact on the agricultural research community. Dr. Hatfield has also been featured in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the Midwest.

Born in Wamego, Kansas, Dr. Hatfield grew up on a farm where he learned all about agriculture. Inspired to understand and improve the agricultural system when he went off to college, he quickly became exposed to research as an undergraduate. Dr. Hatfield notably earned an undergraduate degree from Kansas State University in 1971, a Master's degree from the University of Kentucky in 1972 and a Doctorate from Iowa State University in 1975.
