Hawkins with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Born in Louisburg, NC in 1948, to Leonard and Ruth Hawkins, both deceased. Mr. Hawkins grew up alongside six siblings, Wesley, Willie, Trudy, Kevin, Bonita and Marcus, who had a significant impact on his life. He graduated from Riverside High School, with academic and athletic honors, one being the Golden Helmet Award. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University in 1970.
While pursuing his undergraduate degree, he served in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps for two years. In 1976, he earned a Master of Business Administration from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Hawkins also completed advanced coursework in electrical and computer engineering in the early 70s, at the University of Cincinnati. He was certified in MS OS.
A southern boy who has always enjoyed giving to others. During the 1970s and 80s, Mr. Hawkins mentored two young boys through Big Brothers and Sisters of Greater Cincinnati, for which he also served as a board member in the mid 70s. He recalls that the bonds he formed with the boys were strong, and he still talks and reminisces with "little brother John Hill", to this day. In 1983, he was honored with a Ten-Year Award for his dedication. And, in 1973, he was selected by Ebony Magazine, as one of its most eligible bachelors.
Interested in mathematics since he was in grade school, Mr. Hawkins eventually decided to pursue a career in engineering. While still in higher education, he worked for General Motors Chevrolet Engineering Center, as a summer engineer. After completing his education, he accepted a position with Dow Chemical Company, as a field engineer in 1970 before working for General Electric as a program engineer from 1970 to 1971. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Hawkins pursued an opportunity with Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati, where he started his twenty-three-year career in the Food Manufacturing Division and completed it in the Soap Manufacturing Division.
Mr. Hawkins is currently a business/technology adjunct online professor, for Salem University, in West Virginia. He's also a member of YourEncore, a flexible resourcing, and consulting community, supporting hundreds of clients ranging from global market leaders, to small and medium businesses. He previously served in academia as a business department chair at Brown Mackie College, where he introduced the "Advanced Manufacturing Systems" program, a project that took approximately five years to get into development. Also, while at Brown Mackie College, he was the prime mover, in championing a "CO-OP" program with Procter and Gamble. Mr. Hawkins also taught at various other schools prior to 2004, and was a computer software and hardware instructor for Micro-Center Education between 1998 and 2002.
Active in his community for many years, Mr. Hawkins was a Cub Scout leader, a chapter leader for the Young Astronauts Program, Pro Senior volunteer, and volunteered for L.E.A.R.N, teaching functional illiterates how to read. He was also involved with the STEM program at Hughes High School.
He has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America as well.
Mr. Hawkins' first wife of 23 years, Charlene, passed away in 2001 of a cancer-related illness. They have two sons, Brandon and Justin. In 2006, Mr. Hawkins married his current wife Irene, with son Iven. These days, grandchildren abound, Mr. Hawkins enjoys spending quality time with them. Educating them in chess, the abacus, coding, analytical and logical thinking, and anything else that help develops them spiritually, physically, and mentally.
He is an Elder at Bethel 2 Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Cincinnati, with Bishop Anthony Hill and Lady Yolanda presiding. He is also pursuing entrance into the church's prison ministry program to become a mentor. Mr. Hawkins is a board member, trustee and member of the planning committee for the Mount Auburn Community Council in Cincinnati and serves on the board of three other non-profit organizations.
He enjoys reading, studying, working-out, Tai Chi, eating healthy, basketball shoot-around, spending time with family and friends, and staying abreast of new technologies, such as data analytics, AI, smart cities, robotics, 5G, et. al. In the past, he enjoyed building computers, many times, benevolently.
Mr. Hawkins' philosophy in life is: "To always strive for continuous improvement, spiritually, physically and mentally. Seeking to be humble, prayerful, patient and strong at all times, to do what I can locally, to influence things globally, in making this a kinder, more giving, and forgiving world. To continuously seek the Lord, for a wise and understanding heart, such that I may discern between good and bad."
Indeed, to lead by example, to be a model, or a flowchart, so as to leave an enduring, and a positive legacy for his children, grandchildren, and others to follow. Mr. Hawkins espouses to an aphorism, coined by Mr. James N Gamble, founder of The Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio; "Do the MOST YOU CAN – to the MOST people YOU can – in the MOST ways that YOU can".
