Gayle B. Fenton, EdD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

With 25 years of higher education experience to her credit, Dr. Gayle B. Fenton has worked at Golden West College as a coordinator of student-athlete success since 2014.

With 25 years of higher education experience to her credit, Dr. Fenton has worked at Golden West College as a coordinator of student-athlete success since 2014. Prior to this appointment, she served California State University, Long Beach as Senior Director of Academic Advising (2007-2013) for the university while also serving as Director of Student Success for the College of Business Administration (2012-2013) and Director of Student-Athlete Services (1995-2013). Likewise, she held multiple additional positions at California State University, Long Beach including Special Assistant to the Vice Provost for Student Success (2004-2007), Assistant Director of Orientation (1995-1996) and as Assistant Director, Academic Advising Center (1993-1995).

Dr. Fenton also was a faculty instructor at California State University, Long Beach where she taught COUN 300, Fundamentals of Peer Advising (2007-2009) and Faculty Co-Instructor, Educational Psychology 696, Master Thesis Seminar (1994-1997).

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Fenton pursued an education at California State University, Long Beach, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1990. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Science in Counseling, Student Development in Higher Education in 1993 where her thesis, "CSU Policy & Practices for Undeclared Students" won the first-placed CSU Student Research Award. Dr. Fenton concluded her studies at the University of California, Irvine, in 2006, graduating with a Doctor of Education and was honored by President Alexander in 2008 as the first doctoral candidate to complete the CSU/UCCI Joint Doctorate in Education in 2006.

Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Fenton has participated in numerous endeavors that positively impacted higher education at California State University, Long Beach. These included the following appointed positions: Co-Chair of the University Advising Council (2004-2013), Academic Senate Committee on Athletics (2008-2013), Highly Valued Degree Initiative, Advising Task Force (2010-2013), Senator on CSULB Academic Senate (2010-2013), Early Start Committee (2011-2013) and the General Education Governing Committee (2010-2013).

In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Fenton remains affiliated with various honor organizations in relation to her areas of expertise: Golden Key International Honor Society, Psi Chi, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Fenton also was chosen to be a member of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Society (PBK) from California State University, Long Beach where she now is a member on the university committee that determines who, among a long list of outstanding candidates for this honor each year, receives this honor. Likewise, Dr. Fenton was a member of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), American College Personnel Association (ACPA), National Association of Student Personnel Administration (NASPA), and the National Association of Athletic Advisors (N4A). Today, she continues to serve California State University, Long Beach as a board member on the Emeriti Faculty and Staff Association (ERFAS) that promotes the wellbeing and information exchange for all retired faculty and staff members.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Fenton has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. She has been presented with the Sixth Annual Dean's Exemplary Service Award in 2013 from the College of Business Administration (CBA) at California State University, Long Beach for the creation of the CBA Student Success Program that linked academic advising with a new mentoring program to increase the success rate of their undergraduates. After eighteen years as Director of Student-Athlete Services, Dr. Fenton was given the Beach Pride Award from the Long Beach State Athletic Department for the development of Student-Athlete Services program that increased graduation rates from 23% to 70%. In addition, Dr. Fenton has been honored twice, in 1996 and 2011, for her contribution to the NCAA Certification Self Study for Long Beach State. Dr. Fenton was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
