Dr. Higonnet is a professor emerita at the University of Connecticut who accepted her first faculty appointment at the university in 1970. Specializing in literature of World War I, 19th century British literature, women's writing and feminist literary theory, and children's literature and critical theory, she taught numerous English and comparative literature courses, including Word and Image, the Literature of World War I, Folklore and Fairy Tales, Suicide, Victorian Literature and Children's Literature. She also taught as an instructor at George Washington University, and a guest professor at the University of Munich and the University of Santiago de Compostela.

She has completed extensive work on gender issues in the 19th century. She has authored numerous books, including "The Sense of Sex" in 1993, "Borderwork: Feminist Engagements with Comparative Literature" in 1994, "Lines of Fire: Women Writers of World War I" in 1998, "Nurses at the Front" in 2001, and "Letters and Photographs from the Battle Country by Margaret Hall" in 2014. She has published on Thomas Hardy and German romanticism, co-edited the journal Children's Literature between 1985 and 1990, and served on several editorial boards. Dr. Higonnet has served on the editorial board of the "War and Representation" series, the International Journal of War and Culture Studies, and the Australian Humanities Research Journal. Furthermore, she has contributed dozens of articles, book chapters, review articles and short reviews and has participated in invited lectures and plenary talks both nationally and internationally since 1981.
Dr. Higonnet is the current president of the International Federation for Modern Languages and Literatures. She is a past president of the American Conference on Romanticism and the American Comparative Literature Association. She also co-chaired the study group on gender, society and politics at the Harvard Center for European Studies and is a longtime member and founder of the gender studies committee for the International Comparative Literature Association.
Dr. Higonnet earned a Bachelor of Arts from Bryn Mawr College and a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University. Today, she is the proud parent of her daughter Ethel and step-mother of Anne and Philip Higonnet. She has been happily married to her husband Patrice L. R. Higonnet since 1974.
A former fellow of the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst in Tubingen, Germany, Dr. Higonnet was also a Fulbright scholar in London, National Endowment for the Humanities fellow, and Rockefeller Foundation fellow in France. She has received several travel grants for her work, and won a 1994 Literary Criticism Award/Best Critical Article of 1992 and a 1988 Literary Criticism Award/Best Critical Article of 1987 granted by the Children's Literature Association.
Dr. Higonnet has notably been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women.
