Dr. Selamet is a tenured educator who has been a faculty member of The Ohio State University for more than 20 years. Hired in 1996 as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, he later served as an associate professor, becoming a full professor in 2001. He also notably chaired the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering between 2012 and 2016 and has continued to serve as a consultant at the university since 1996. Some of the courses Dr. Selamet teaches include ME5530: Internal Combustion Engines, ME7520: Wave Dynamics in Fluids and ME6526: Combustion. He formerly worked as a research scientist and consultant at the University of Michigan between 1989 and 1995.
Throughout his career, Dr. Selamet has conducted research in internal combustion engines, linear and nonlinear wave dynamics, noise and pollutant emission control, combustion, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. He has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly articles as a result of his research in such publications as the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America and the Journal of Sound and Vibration. He also served as an associate editor for the Noise Control Engineering Journal and the International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration.
Dr. Selamet is an elected fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and SAE International. He is also a longtime member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Noise Control Engineering.
The recipient of a 2017 Ralph K. Hillquist NVH Lifetime Achievement Award from SAE International, Dr. Selamet previously received a Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from the organization in 1999. Other recognitions have included a Charles E. MacQuigg Student Award for Outstanding Teaching and a Stanley E. Harrison Faculty Award for Excellence in Engineering from the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University in 1997 and 2002, respectively. Likewise, he was the recipient of a NATO Scholarship from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey from 1982 to 1985, an Outstanding Achievement Award in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1986, and a Lumley Research Award and Innovators Award from The Ohio State University in 2001 and 2009, respectively. Dr. Selamet has further been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Selamet first earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Istanbul Technical University in Turkey in 1980 and 1982, respectively. Attending the University of Michigan soon thereafter, he completed both a Master of Science in aerospace science in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering in 1989. Married since 1983 to Emel Evren, Dr. Selamet has one son, Mert, of whom he is immensely proud.
