Luster Doyle Mathis was a professor of government and college historian at Berry College from 2000 to 2003, having been provost and chief academic officer of the college from 1999 to 2000.

With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Mathis was a professor of government and college historian at Berry College from 2000 to 2003, having been provost and chief academic officer of the college from 1999 to 2000, vice president of academy affairs from 1993 to 1999, and vice president and dean from 1975 to 1993. Prior to obtaining these roles, he held a number of positions with the University of West Georgia, including associate dean from 1972 to 1975, professor and associate professor from 1965 to 1975, chairman of the division of graduate studies from 1970 to 1973, and department head from 1969 to 1971. Earlier in his career, Dr. Mathis was an associate professor at Belmont University from 1962 to 1964 and California Baptist University from 1961 to 1962, and an assistant professor of political science at Brenau University from 1960 to 1961.

Dr. Mathis began his career as a student at Berry College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts. He then joined the University of Georgia, where he completed a Master of Arts. He continued his studies with the school, earning a Doctor of Philosophy on a University Alumni Foundation Fellowship.

A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Mathis has been affiliated with a number of organizations in his community. The former president of the Georgia Political Science Association, he is a member of the American Association for Higher Education and the American Conference of Academic Deans. He has also served on the Georgia Democratic Charter Commission, the consumer advisory committee of Floyd Medical Center, and as chair of Marshland Federal Credit Union.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mathis has been recognized for his contributions. A former fellow of the National Historical Publications Commission, he has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
