Celebrated for his considerable contributions to academia, Dr. Wood began his career with an education from Tufts University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1955. He followed this accomplishment with service in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958. He returned to his academic efforts with a Master of Arts from Harvard University in 1959. Dr. Wood ultimately concluded his studies in 1964, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in history from Harvard University.

Working as a history professor at Brown University from 1969 to 2008, Dr. Wood has also excelled as a Pitt professor of American History at Cambridge University, an associate professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and an assistant professor at Harvard University. Accruing extensive experience in the educational arena, he also worked as a Bancroft lecturer at the United States Naval Academy in 1986, an Anson G. Phelps lecturer at New York University in 1986, a Samuel Paley lecturer at Hebrew University in 1987 and a participant in a presidential lecture series in 1991. A former member of the council at the Institute of Early American History and Culture, Dr. Wood has participated in civic outreach through the board of trustees at Colonial Williamsburg.

Notable for numerous contributions to his field, Dr. Wood is particularly proud of his first book, "The Creation of the American Republic, 1776-1787," which was published in 1969. His other prominent works include "The Rising Glory of America, 1760-1820" and the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Radicalism of the American Revolution," which he co-wrote in 1992. Dr. Wood has also co-edited numerous texts, including "Imagined Histories: American Historians Interpret the Past," and written "The American Revolution: A History" and "The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin."

Dr. Wood is additionally affiliated with the American Historical Association, which presented him with the John Dunning Prize. He is also a member of the Organization of American Historians, the Society of American Historians, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. Furthermore, Dr. Wood was the president of the Society of Historians of the Early American Republic and the chairman of the board of advisors for the National Historical Society.

Demonstrating unmatched professional knowledgeability, Dr. Wood has been the recipient of numerous awards in his field, including Columbia University's Bancroft Prize in 1970, the Australian-American Educational Foundation's Distinguished Visitor Award in 1976 and the American History Book Prize in 2010, among others. He has also accepted Phi Beta Kappa's Emerson Prize, a Fletcher Jones Foundation Distinguished fellowship and induction into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. Notably, he was bestowed with a National Humanities Medal from President Obama in 2011 due to the significant scope of his work in history education and scholarship.
