Robert W. Bennett Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A staple on the Chicago campus of Northwestern University for nearly 50 years, Mr. Bennett has since become a Nathaniel L. Nathanson professor emeritus of law in September 2018. Hired as a faculty member in 1969, he became a professor of law in 1974 and served as dean of the university's law school between 1985 and 1995. Specializing in legislation, American democracy, contracts and constitutional law, Mr. Bennett taught various courses in contracts, legislation, constitutional law and constitutional theory. Most recently, he taught Contracts, an introduction to American contract law with an emphasis on common law development. During his tenure in academia, Mr. Bennett also taught as a visiting professor at the University of Illinois College of Law, the University of Virginia School of Law, the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, Brooklyn Law School and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University.

Prior to his tenure in academia, Mr. Bennett was an associate attorney at Mayer, Brown & Platt in Chicago between 1968 and 1969 and a Reginald Heber Smith Fellow at the Office of Economic Opportunity assigned to the Chicago Legal Aid Bureau between 1967 and 1968. He also served as a legal assistant for the Federal Communications Commission commissioner Nicholas Johnson between 1966 and 1967.

Mr. Bennett authored a number of scholarly articles during his career, as well as monographs, periodical articles, books and book chapters. He notably co-authored the book "Constitutional Originalism: A Debate" with Lawrence B. Solum in 2011 and authored "Taming the Electoral College" in 2006. A fellow, past president and board of directors member of the American Bar Foundation, Mr. Bennett is also a longtime member, past president and co-founder of the Chicago Council of Lawyers. He remains active as a member of the American Bar Association and the American Law Institute as well.

Mr. Bennett has been cited in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the Midwest. He earned both a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, and a Bachelor of Laws, cum laude, from the prestigious Harvard University in 1962 and 1965, respectively. Elected to Phi Beta Kappa while at Harvard, Mr. Bennett also served on the editorial board of the Harvard Law Review and received a Knox Memorial Fellowship to study at the London School of Economics and Political Science between 1965 and 1966. He was soon after admitted to the Illinois Bar Association in 1966.

Born in Chicago, Mr. Bennett later married his wife Harriet Trop in 1979. He has one daughter. In retirement, he enjoys playing tennis and visiting art museums.
