Lizbeth Jane Curme Stevens, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Since 1998, Dr. Stevens has excelled as a speech-language pathologist and a professor in the Department of Special Education, College of Education, at Eastern Michigan University (EMU). Having taught neuroanatomy and courses primarily in the areas of child language disorders and augmentative and alternative communication at EMU, she spent over two decades in the field first working for Northville Public Schools, Warren Woods Public Schools and Daly's Speech and Language Center. During her years of clinical practice, Dr. Stevens also found success as an adjunct instructor for Marygrove College between 1990 and 1995 and Wayne State University between 1997 and 1998.

During her tenure, Dr. Stevens has presented and been published on service learning and augmentative and alternative communication at state, national and international levels. She has authored numerous articles published in various peer reviewed journals, including the Journal of Speech-Language-Hearing Research, and has contributed chapters to several books in her area of expertise. A former reviewer for Perspectives on Language, Learning and Education between 2009 and 2013, Dr. Stevens served in the same capacity for Perspectives on Issues in Higher Education in 2014.

Dr. Stevens has long been affiliated with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), where she has held various roles, including Legislative Councilor and Advisory Council Member. In 2011, Dr. Stevens became a site visitor for the Council of Academic Accreditation, reviewing various university programs for ASHA and currently continues in this capacity. A long time supporter of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHF) she became an ambassador to EMU for the ASHF University Giving program.

Within the state of Michigan, Dr. Stevens has served the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association in many capacities including: its president in 2006 and vice president for public schools between 2000 and 2003. She also founded the Michigan Speech-Language Hearing Foundation (MSHF), an organization providing students who are going into the field with scholarships and served as the first president of its board of directors. In 2009 she was appointed by Michigan's governor to the first Michigan Board of Speech-Language Pathology, serving as vice-chair in 2012. She also served as the president of the Council of State Association Presidents (of speech-language hearing associations) in 2008.

The recipient of a James B. Angell scholarship through the University of Michigan in 1975, Dr. Stevens has since accepted several notable awards in her field. Obtaining the Continuing Education Award from ASHA many times between 1983 and 2018, she was presented with a Clara B. Stoddard Award from Wayne State University in 1987, the Fellow award from the ASHA in 2007 and the Honors of the Michigan Speech-Language Hearing Association in 2008. Most recently, she was honored with the Dale Rice Award for Academic Innovation in AS-L and Community Engagement from Eastern Michigan University. Likewise, Dr. Stevens was selected for inclusion in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and the 15th edition of Who's Who of American Women.

Pursuing an education at the University of Michigan, Dr. Stevens earned an undergraduate and a Master's degree in 1974 and 1976, respectively. She then graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from Wayne State University in 1992. She is further certified in Clinical Competence through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and as a teacher by the state of Michigan. Moreover, Dr. Stevens is licensed to practice as a speech-language pathologist in Michigan.
