Goodman, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Goodman celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Goodman has been a William Neal Reynolds distinguished university professor at North Carolina State University in Raleigh since 1988. First hired in 1967 as a visiting assistant professor, one year later he began serving as an assistant professor, then associate professor in 1970 and finally full professor of crop science, statistics, genetics and botany in 1976.

Throughout his career, Dr. Goodman's primary focus of research has included the evolution of cultivated plants, especially maize, plant breeding, isozyme genetics and numerical taxonomy. Collaborating alongside Dr. Charles Stuber at one point, he notably worked on a project that involved isozyme genetics. The two were able to take the entire field of marker genetics and turn it into a major part of plant breeding and human genetics. It was a profound moment in Dr. Goodman's career.

As a result of Dr. Goodman's research over the years, he has authored and co-authored several scholarly articles in various peer-reviewed journals, including "Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology" and "Crop Science." He also co-authored "Races of Maize in Brazil and Adjacent Areas" in 1977.

A longtime member of several professional organizations, Dr. Goodman has been active with the Crop Science Society of America, the Society for Economic Botany, the Society for Systemic Botany and the National Academy of Sciences, among others. He was also honored by the Crop Science Society of America with a Research Award in 2005 for his work. Active on a number of committees as well, including as the vice chairman of the NAS-NRC panel on global genetic resources, Dr. Goodman also served as a panel member of the OTA panel on biological diversity and as a panel member of Genetic Mechanisms, USDA competitive grants.

The recipient of a Holladay Medal in 2003, Meyer Medal in 2000, and O. Max Gardener Award in 1987, Dr. Goodman also received several research awards from Sigma Xi. He has been cited in more than 35 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

Growing up in a small town in Iowa, Dr. Goodman spent nine summers employed at Pioneer Hybrid Corn Company, a business proficient in corn breeding. Going off to college, he earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics with a minor in chemistry from Iowa State University in 1960, followed by a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in genetics with a minor in statistics from North Carolina State University in 1963 and 1965, respectively. While pursuing his master's and doctorate degrees, Dr. Goodman was a research assistant and National Science Foundation cooperative fellow on campus between 1960 and 1965. He also spent two years as a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the Instituto de Genetica, Escola Superior de Agricultura, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from 1965 to 1967.
