Dr. Robert D. King is a distinguished professor emeritus who taught and chaired several departments at the University of Texas at Austin for 52 years.

Dr. King is a distinguished professor emeritus who taught and chaired several departments at the University of Texas at Austin for 52 years. Studying abroad in Germany, he originally planned to work in mathematics but found himself much more intrigued by history, language and literature. Going back to college to study language, he completed a master's degree and doctorate and became a linguist and history instructor.

After one year as a mathematician with IBM, Dr. King obtained a faculty position at the University of Texas at Austin in 1965. Working his way up from an assistant professor of linguistics to full professor, he also served as dean, Audre and Bernard Rapoport Chair of Jewish Studies, interim dean and chairman of the department of linguistics. Dr. King was also notably the founder and dean of the College of Liberal Arts, where he helped raise more than $30 million for the school.

Specializing in Jewish history and the history of India, Dr. King's most recent research has included the topics of language, nationalism and ethnic identity. He also maintains an interest in historical linguistics, DNA and the origins of spoken language and politics, among other areas of study.

Dr. King was the author of "Historical Linguistics and Generative Grammar" in 1969. He later authored "Nehru and the Language Politics of India" in 1997, which examines Nehru's role in the language crises and discusses the language controversies that accompanied the first years of Indian independence, which pushed the country of India to the brink of instability. Dr. King also edited of "The Statecraft of Diplomacy" and has authored various scholarly articles.

In his earlier years, Dr. King was a visiting professor at the University of Toronto, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Oregon. He maintains membership in the Institute for the German Language, the Linguistic Society of America, the Association for Asian Studies and the India International Centre. Locally, Dr. King donated his time as a volunteer with the Austin Humane Society between 2011 and 2014.

Since 1988, Dr. King has been included in approximately 15 editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. He notably holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Georgia Institute of Technology since 1959, and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin since 1962 and 1965, respectively. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve between 1959 and 1963.
