With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Ms. Mattson retired in 2018, having been branch chief contracting officer of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute since 2012. Prior to obtaining this role, she was contracting officer and team leader in the department of health and human services with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration from 2005 to 2012. Earlier in her career, she was a contracting officer with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease from 2000 to 2005, the National Cancer Institute from 1993 to 2000, and in the division of procurement with the National Institutes of Health from 1990 to 1993.

From 1986 to 1989, Ms. Mattson was a contract specialist with the Goddard Space Flight Center, having been a presidential management intern since 1984. She was previously a technical information specialist with the National Library of Medicine from 1980 to 1984, and she was a virologist with the National Institute of Neurological and Communicable Diseases and Stroke from 1975 to 1980. Earlier in her career, she was a microbiologist with Microbiologist Associates, Inc., from 1974 to 1975 and Meloy Laboratories, Inc., from 1973 to 1974, and she was a virologist in the Veterinary Research Diagnostic Laboratory with South Dakota State University from 1970 to 1973.

Ms. Mattson began her career as a student at Montana State University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in microbiology in 1969. She then joined South Dakota State University, receiving a Master of Science in biology in 1972. She continued her studies with Georgetown University, completing postgraduate coursework in 1977. She subsequently earned a Master of Government Administration with the University of Maryland in 1984.

Throughout her career, Ms. Mattson has been recognized for her contributions. The recipient of the Director's Award from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in 2015, she was honored with the Honor Award from the National Institutes of Health in 2014 and the National Achievement Award from the National Contract Management Association in 2012 and was elected as a NCMA Fellow in 2000. Previously, she was presented with the Quality of Word Life HHS/SAMHSA Partnership Award in 2011, the Superior Internal Service Award in 2008, and the Secretary's Award for Distinguished Service in 2006. Earlier in her career, she was the recipient of the NCMA Mid-Atlantic Region Member of the Year Award in 2001. She has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Married with two children and one grandchild, Ms. Mattson enjoys painting in oil, acrylic and watercolor in her spare time. Participating in exhibitions in Friendship Heights, Kensington, Glen Echo, and Brookside Gardens, MD, she is a member of the Montgomery County Art Association.
