Leslie Karen Darner received a First Mary Hatwood Futrell Award for distinguished work and advocacy in education from the Virginia Education Association.

Ms. Darner is a former state legislator and school speech pathologist who officially retired in 2008. Originally working for the Special School District of St. Louis County, MO, as a speech pathologist and hearing clinician between 1968 and 1971, she then devoted another 35 years to the Arlington Public Schools as a speech pathologist. Taking two years off during her tenure, she entered the Peace Corps as a speech pathologist and audiologist. In 1991, Ms. Darner began a second career as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates of the Virginia General Assembly, where she remained until 2004.
Holding numerous leadership positions over the years, Ms. Darner was active with the League of Women Voters, the Arlington Civic Federation, the Mental Health Association of Northern Virginia and the Arlington Community Temporary Shelter (now known as Doorways), among other organizations. She serves on the boards for Community Resources, Inc., and the Arlington Committee of 100, and she has been active with the Rape Victim Companion Program through the Arlington's Commission on the Status of Women. Ms. Darner formerly co-chaired a special task force of the Arlington Community Foundation, was a representative of the American Association of University Women in Nairobi, Kenya, and served on the advisory board of her alma mater, the University of Illinois. She was also a Brownie Scout leader during the mid-1980s for three years. Ms. Darner is a longstanding member of the Virginia and Arlington Education Association, the Arlington Commission on Statues of Women, the Virginia Relay Board for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and the Virginia Commission on Youth.
During the summer of 1985, Ms. Darner attended a United Nations Conference for Women Ending the International Decade of Women. In February 2010, she was part of a team that provided teacher training in Liberia through the Liberia Orphan Education Project. She later participated in mission work in Honduras with the Honduras International Bilingual School in 2017.
Ms. Darner was selected as Teacher of the Year for Randolph Elementary School in 2007. Honored with several other awards, she received a First Mary Hatwood Futrell Award for distinguished work and advocacy in education from the Virginia Education Association, the Journal Cup Award for community activism from the Arlington Civic Federation, and the Spirit of Community William T. Newman Award from the Arlington Community Foundation. She has been showcased in approximately a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of American Women. Earning both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from the University of Illinois in 1967 and 1968, respectively, Ms. Darner has been a licensed speech pathologist in Virginia since 1976, when state licensure began in Virginia.
