Frederic J. Baumgartner received a Dudley Award in the History of Astronomy and a Pollack Award in the History of Astronomy.

Dr. Baumgartner recently retired from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University after teaching on campus for 41 years. A professor emeritus of history, he was renowned for his work as a leading scholar of 16th Century French history, military history, and the Reformation. During his tenure, he also supported numerous committees, served as vice president and president of the College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Association, chaired the faculty senate committee on faculty ethics and was president of the Virginia Tech chapter of the American Association of University Professors. Prior to joining the Virginia Tech faculty, Dr. Baumgartner was an assistant professor of history at Georgia College in Milledgeville from 1972 to 1976.

Throughout his career, Dr. Baumgartner conducted extensive research in his field and received multiple grants and fellowships for his work. His research also resulted in over a dozen scholarly journal articles, over 50 encyclopedia entries, over 50 book reviews and contributions to seven book chapters. He also authored nine of his own books, including "Declaring War in Early Modern Europe" in 2013, "Behind Locked Doors" in 2003 and "Longing for the End" in 1999. His 1988 book, "Henry II King of France," was the recipient of a Charles Smith Prize, which he received in 1989.

Dr. Baumgartner is a longstanding member of the American Catholic Historical Association and the Southern Historical Association. He has also been active with the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference.

Named Historian of the Year by the Virginia Social Science Association for his teachings and research in 2002, Dr. Baumgartner also received a Dudley Award in the History of Astronomy and a Pollack Award in the History of Astronomy. He has notably been cited in approximately 15 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

Dr. Baumgartner earned a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Saint Paul College, followed by a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
