With more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Zimbrick has been a Professor and Professor Emeritus at Colorado State University since 2003 as well as the Department Head of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences from 2003 to 2008. He has also been an Adjunct Professor in the School of Health Sciences at Purdue University since 2015.

Prior to these appointments, he was a Professor at Purdue University from 1997 to 2003, Director of the Board on Radiation Effects Research at the National Academy of Sciences and Principal Investigator of the Department of Energy grant for studies on the atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki from 1993 to 1997, Chairman and Executive Secretary of the Radiation Study Section at the National Institutes of Health from 1984 to 1989, and a Department Head at the Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratory from 1989 to 1993. Earlier in his career, Dr. Zimbrick rose from Assistant to Associate to Full Professor at the University of Kansas from 1969 to 1984, and prior to this period worked as a physicist at the IIT Research Institute from 1962 to 1964.

Dr. Zimbrick began his career as a student at Carleton College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Physics in 1960. He subsequently enrolled at the University of Kansas, receiving a Master of Science in Radiation Biophysics in 1962. He concluded his studies with the University in 1967, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Radiation Biophysics. Dr. Zimbrick also completed a postdoctoral research program in Subcellular Radiation Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1969.

A respected leader in interdisciplinary radiation research, Dr. Zimbrick has been active in a number of professional organizations in his field. He is an elected Fellow of the Health Physics Society and served as President of the Radiation Research Society. While maintaining a successful academic and professional career, Dr Zimbrick has also become a well-known jazz radio producer and host, having started in radio at Carleton College on KARL in 1956 and continuing his avocation on Kansas Public Radio, Purdue Public Radio, Northwest Public Radio, KRFC Community Radio and WPFW Community radio.

Throughout his career, Dr. Zimbrick has been recognized for his contributions. He received a Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Carleton College and the Robert F. Landolt Outstanding Teaching Award from Purdue University. Additionally, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award and Excellence in Mentoring Award from the Radiation Research Society in 2004 and 2008, respectively. In 2017 he was the recipient of the Distinguished Lifetime Research Achievement Award from the Health Physics Society. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in America.
