Alice Pouncey dedicated her professional life to helping shape young minds, bringing her expertise to the middle school, high school and college levels.

DECATUR, MS, April 01, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alice Pouncey has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With a career in psychology and home economics education that spanned 40 years, Alice Pouncey dedicated her professional life to helping shape young minds, bringing her expertise to the middle school, high school and college levels.

Born and raised in Mississippi, Ms. Pouncey had two major figures in her life growing up who set her on her career path — her aunt, who was a home economist, and her high school home economics teacher Ms. Davis. She knew from an early age that she wanted to one day be a teacher, and had long been interested in psychology, but upon entering high school and taking that class, Ms. Pouncey realized just how much she enjoyed home economics.

She earned an Associate of Arts from Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi, in 1959, then received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1961. Before returning to receive her Master of Education from Livingston University (Now University of West Alabama) in 1968, Ms. Pouncey taught home economics both at Enterprise Middle School, from 1961 to 1963, and J.F. Shields High School in Alabama, from 1963 to 1965.

Ms. Pouncey became a professor of psychology at East Central Community College in Decatur, Mississippi, in 1969. Three years later, the home economics professor passed away suddenly, and so, at the end of the semester, the president of the college called Ms. Pouncey in to speak with him about taking over the role, in addition to her regular psychology course, knowing that she had a Bachelor of Science degree. While he told her he wouldn't make her go back to school, she ended up having to return to the University of Southern Mississippi, 90 miles away, to obtain 18 hours in the field of home economics. With three children at that point, Ms. Pouncey completed her schooling with the help of her husband, a football coach at the university who watched their two daughters and son when he wasn't working, and college students she trusted. She also fulfilled postgraduate work at Mississippi State University. She received recognition from the college with an Outstanding Instructor of the Year award in 1994, and a State 4-H Alumni award for her years of service on the advisory council and as president for 4-H, a youth development and mentoring organization designed to "engage youth to reach their fullest potential …"

Ms. Pouncey would end up teaching the two subjects up until her retirement in 2001, and, in addition, taught Sunday school and was a member of the chancel choir at her Methodist Church. Throughout her career, she has been part of several organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution; the Mississippi Association of Educators; the Mississippi Professional Educators; the Mississippi Junior College Faculty Association; and the Mississippi Retired Education Personnel. Additionally, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Iota, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Union Home and Garden Club.

Despite all her career accomplishments and accolades, Ms. Pouncey considers her crowning achievement to be her family.

Eighteen years since her retirement, Ms. Pouncey leaves behind a legacy of hard work, determination, and perseverance to meet goals made at such an early age
