Janet E. Del Bene, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Del Bene is professor emerita of physical chemistry at Youngstown State University. She was a faculty member for 29 years, retiring from teaching in 1999. As a faculty member, she taught honors first-year chemistry to the students in the 6-year BS/MD program with the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. In addition to her teaching, Dr. Del Bene carried out quantum chemical studies of chemical systems. Her first paper, published in the Journal of Chemical Physics in 1968, was denoted a Science Citation Classic. Since then, Dr. Del Bene has published 300 scholarly papers in her field.

Dr. Del Bene served as a consultant in the basic medical sciences at the Northeast Ohio Medical University, and as a consultant to the newly-formed computational chemistry group at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. She was a BBVA Visiting Fellow at the University of Madrid in 2002, and a Visiting Professor of Chemistry at the University of Sydney, Australia in 1999, 2000, and 2004. She also spent the winters between 2000 and 2005 as a visitor at the Quantum Theory Project of the University of Florida. Dr. Del Bene delivered the Maria Goeppert-Mayer lecture at the University of California, San Diego, and the San Diego Supercomputer Center. She was an invited speaker at many national and international meetings, including the 2017 Conference on Halogen Bonding in Supramolecular and Solid State Chemistry in Ottawa, Canada.

The recipient of research grants from the Dreyfus Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation throughout her career, she was awarded a two-year National Science Foundation Grant Extension for Special Creativity in 2002. Dr. Del Bene also received the first CERFnet Award for Excellence in Networked Applications in 1991. She later received the Heritage Award from Youngstown State University in 2003, and a Morley Medal presented by the Cleveland Section of the American Chemical Society in 2008. Dr. Del Bene received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Youngstown State University in 2009.

Dr. Del Bene is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. A member of the American Chemical Society, she served on the organization's Irving Langmuir Award canvassing committee from 1978 to 1983, and the executive board of the newly created Division of Computers in Chemistry from 1974-1976. A longtime member of Iota Sigma Pi, she was the recipient of a 1972 Agnes Fay Morgan Research Award and a 2002 Honorary Life Member Award. Dr. Del Bene was also active as a member of the Statewide Users Group of the Ohio Supercomputer Center from 1986-2001, where she served as Chair for the 1988-1989 year. Locally, she is a member of the Board of Directors of Ursuline High School, the Bishop's advisory council for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, and Parish Council of St. Rose Church.

Originally planning to pursue a career as a mathematician, Dr. Del Bene instead went into chemistry, completed undergraduate research in computational chemistry, earning Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Youngstown State University in 1963 and 1965, respectively, and a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry from the University of Cincinnati in 1968. Upon graduating, Dr. Del Bene completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Theoretical Chemistry Institute in 1969, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Mellon Institute in 1970. At Mellon Institute, she studied with Sir John A. Pople, 1998 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. She also spent sabbatical leaves at Mellon Institute in 1980-1981, The Ohio State University in 1988-1989, and the University of Cambridge in 1996 and the University of Florida in 1997.
