Heinz Sass Celebrates Four Decades of Professional Excellence in His Field

Dr. Sass affiliates earned a grant through the German Research Foundation

Dr. Heinz Sass has been designated as professor emeritus in the department of genetics at the University of Leipzig, where he worked as a department head.

LEIPZIG, GERMANY, April 03, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Heinz Sass has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With 40 years of academic research experience under his belt, Dr. Sass has been designated as professor emeritus in the department of genetics at the University of Leipzig, where he worked as a department head. Earlier in his career, he found success as a postdoctoral research fellow with the University of Heidelberg. He hold appointments as visiting scientist and research associate with such universities as Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, the Worcester Foundation of Experimental Biology and the prestigious Harvard University. In a career filled with highlights, he conducted research on polytene/giant chromosomes and genes of diptera-insects. He is especially proud of extensive research he has performed on transcriptional activity of RNA polymerase II/B and the hereby involved changes of chromatin structure using Chironomus tentans as a model organism. In addition, Dr. Sass discovered the transcription-dependent occurrence of U1 and U2 small nuclear ribonucleoproteins at major sites of RNA-production activity at chromosomal loci coinciding with RNA-splicing. At Harvard, Dr. Sass designed and constructed new jumping genes to integrate the novel fusion gene hsp82-neo into the D. melanogaster fly genome. This procedure led to neomycin-resistant single-insert lines of fruit fly D. melanogaster transformants allowing to measure gene dosage compensation in larvae. At the University of Leipzig, Dr. Sass and students of his lab identified new genes by gain-of-function genetics using his novel promoterless hsp82-neo constructs in the neomycin-resistant D. melanogaster.

An expert in his field, Dr. Sass has earned a graduate degree in biology and chemistry from Eberhard-Karls University in Tübingen where he also obtained a Doctor of Natural Sciences at the Max-Planck Institute for Biology. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Sass is affiliated with the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for Advancement of Sciences and the Genetics Society of Germany.

Over the years, Dr. Sass has authored a pleothora of published articles, including "hsp82-neo-mutagenese und gene-trapping in D. melanogaster." For his professional accomplishments, he has accepted grants to finance his research with the German Research Foundation and the Volkswagen Foundation. Looking toward the future, Dr. Sass intends to continue parlaying his knowledge to others through his role as professor emeritus.
