Marcia Texler Segal, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Marcia Texler Segal has been recognized as professor of sociology and dean emerita of Indiana University Southeast since 2004.

With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Segal has been recognized as professor of sociology and dean emerita of Indiana University Southeast since 2004. Prior to her retirement, she was a professor with the university from 1987 to 2004, where she focused her research on gender from an intersectional perspective in both domestic and international development contexts, and associate vice chancellor from 1988 to 2004. Earlier in her career, she was an associate professor from 1979 to 1987 and an assistant professor from 1970 to 1979.

Dr. Segal sat on the board of directors of the Indiana Consortium for International Programs from 1978 to 1981, having previously directed the project at the YMCA in Louisville, KY, as a project director and Indiana University Southeast as an affirmative action officer. She was additionally a visiting lecturer in the Chancellor College, University of Malawi from 1984-1985 and again in 1989. Civically involved, she coordinated women's rights efforts for the American Civil Liberties Union in Louisville and sat on the board of directors of the Louisville Youth Orchestra, Kentucky Center Chamber Players and Communities in Schools of Clark County, a position she has held since 2001. She also served the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana in many capacities, most notably as 1st vice president from 2009-2013 and national council delegate from 2011-2013.

Dr. Segal began her career as a student at Binghamton University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1961. She continued her studies with Columbia University, completing a Master of Arts in 1963. She then joined Indiana University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1970. During her tenure in education, she has served as co-editor of the "Advances in Gender Research" series since 1996, of which the current volume focuses on gender and its relationship to the media. She has further contributed myriad articles to academic journals.

A respected voice in her areas of expertise, Dr. Segal has been an active leader in her community. She is a member of Sociologists for Women in Society, the American Sociological Association, the North Central Sociological Association, where she formerly served as president, and the International Sociological Association. She has also been affiliated with the Association for the Social Scientific of Jewry, where she sat on the executive board, and the Opportunities in Retirement Network, where she has served as co-chair, the most current of the many elected and appointed positions she held within the American Sociological Association, since 2017.

Throughout her career, Dr. Segal has been recognized for her contributions. She has been recognized as a Scholar-Diplomat of the United States State Department, and she held a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and a National Institute of Mental Health Predoctoral Fellowship. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including the 24th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.

Born to Martin William and Sara Libby (Zass) Texler in New York City, she married Edwin Stanley Segal in 1962. They have two daughters, Shoshanna Abra and Marta Stephanie, two granddaughters and one grandson.
