John Sharify Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Shahab John Sharify lives and breathes storytelling and is grateful to those willing to share their stories. Supported by nearly 40 years of practiced experience in journalism, Mr. Sharify is currently a special projects reporter at KING 5 TV, a role he has held since 2009. Alongside this position, he has been serving as the general manager of Seattle Colleges Cable Television since 2008. He has also served as general manager of Seattle Community Media, the city of Seattle's public access station, since 2011. Prior to these roles, he was a reporter at KOMO-TV in Seattle from 1989 to 2007 and WPIX-TV in New York City from 1981 to 1989. In addition to his primary responsibilities, he was president of the Northwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences from 2006 to 2010, having previously been vice president from 2004 to 2006. From 2001 to 2003, Mr. Sharify was also president of the board of a non-profit called People Helper in Seattle.

Mr. Sharify's passion for storytelling has taken him around the world as he presents workshops in newsrooms on the craft of video storytelling. Every year he volunteers on the faculty of the NPPA News Video workshop which is a weeklong 'storytelling bootcamp' for working journalists held at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.

His 2010 documentary about the holocaust, "The Boys of Terezin", has been shown in film festivals around the world including, Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto, West Palm, Miami, New Jersey and Seattle. He directed, wrote and narrated the film. His latest documentary "Hear Our Story Now", which he produced, wrote and narrated in 2018, chronicles two decades of work created by a Seattle organization called Music of Remembrance. Mr. Sharify is honored to have presented a Ted Talk in 2012 about his National Edward R. Murrow award winning documentary called "Climb of a Lifetime."

Shahab John Sharify is a proud graduate of Princeton University; the class of 1979. After graduation, he attended Columbia University where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film Directing in 1981.

One of the most honored broadcast journalists in the country, Mr. Sharify is a 72 time regional Emmy Award winner. He's been nominated for Emmys nearly 250 times. He has also been presented with eight National Edward R. Murrow Awards, including three National Murrow Awards for Writing in 2004, 2007 and 2008. In 2015, he was selected as the Reporter of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association, and was selected as a runner up in 2013 and 2017. In June 2018, Mr. Sharify was inducted into the Silver Circle by the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The honor goes to individuals who've made a significant contribution to the broadcast industry.

Mr. Sharify's all time favorite stories are the ones he wrote about his son Perry when he competed as a breaststroker at the Olympic Trials in 2012, and his story in 1998, featuring his daughter Jade on 'bring your daughter to work day.' His biggest joy these days is visiting with his two grandsons Lucas and Niko.
