After accruing more than four decades of professional excellence, Dr. Jo Bell Whitlatch retired from her role as associate library dean for San Jose State University

After accruing more than four decades of professional excellence, Dr. Whitlatch retired from her role as associate library dean for San Jose State University in 2006, where she also worked as history liaison of the University Library, access division head, circulation librarian and cataloguer. At the start of her career, she joined the University of St. Thomas and California State University, Stanislaus, as an acquisitions librarian and bibliographer. Over the years, she gained valuable expertise in collection management, acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, reference, interlibrary loans and library management. Additionally, she sat on the boards of the American Library Association, the California and Academic Research Librarians, and the California Library Association. Although her career has been filled with highlights, she is especially proud of obtaining her doctorate after the birth of her daughter.
An expert in her field, Dr. Whitlatch holds a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Master of Library Science from the University of Minnesota, and a Master of Arts in Asian studies and a Doctor of Philosophy in library and information sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. To remain abreast of changes in the field, she maintains affiliation with the American Library Association, the Academy of Management, the Association for Asian Studies, and the Reference and User Services Association. In her spare time, she contributes to her community through the Evergreen Education Foundation Board and the San Jose State University Emeritus and Retired Faculty Association.
With expert knowledge at her disposal, Dr. Whitlatch contributed to "Competency-Based Career Planning for Reference and User Services Professionals," "The Role of the Academic Librarian" and "Evaluating Reference Services," as well as articles in College & Research Libraries and the Journal of Academic Librarianship. In light of her outstanding work, she was featured in the 46th and 47th editions of Who's Who in America. Looking toward the future, Dr. Whitlatch intends to continue enjoying her retirement.
