Accruing 43 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Hay most recently served as a visiting scholar and then Professor at the GEOMAR Centre for Ocean Research of the University of Kiel in Germany from 1990 to 2002. He began his teaching career as a faculty member in the department of geology at the University of Illinois at Urbana­ Champaign in 1960, remaining in this position for 13 years. Dr. Hay also became professor of marine geology and geophysics in the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Miami from 1968 to 1982. During this time he served on many JOIDES scientific panels for the Deep Sea Drilling Project as well as on the JOIDES Planning and Executive Committees.

Chairing the school's division of marine geology for two years, Dr. Hay moved up the ranks from interim dean to dean between 1976 and 1980. Shifting gears, he held the position of president of Joint Oceanographic Institutions in Washington, D.C., from 1979 to 1982. Returning to academia, Dr. Hay spent time with the University of Colorado as director of the University Museum from 1982 to 1987 and professor of geological sciences and a fellow· of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences from 1983 to 1998.

In addition to this tenure, Dr. Hay served as Chair of the science advisory committee for the Ocean Margin Drilling Program from 1979 to 1983. He also sat on the advisory panel for sedimentary and geochemistry processes of Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling from 1989 to 1992, where he was chair from I 994 to I 997.

Becoming involved in his profession because he fell in love with the mountains of Colorado, he first became enamored with the mountains due to yearly visits to Estes Park, where the air quality was better to help his brother's asthma in the summer. Dr. Hay began cultivating his skills as an amateur geologist in grade school moving into high school.

Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Hay was an undergraduate at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, but spent his Junior year in Munich, Germany in Wayne State University's Junior Year in Munich Program. He earned his Bachelor of Science in biology from SMU in 1955. He completed a year of postgraduate coursework at the University of Zurich in Switzerland from 1955 and 1956. Returning to the United States he attended the University of Illinois, where he received a Master of Science in geology in 1958. Dr. Hay went on to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy in geology from Stanford University in California in l 960 and a year of Postdoctoral study at the University of Basel in Switzerland.He has recently been presented with an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Kiel.

A prolific writer, Dr. Hay has authored one book, "Experimenting on a Small Planet: A Scholarly Entertainment," first published by Copernicus in 20 l 3. He was also an associate editor of the Journal of Foraminiferal Research from 1970 to 1973, Paleoceanography from I985 to 1988 and Newsletters on Stratigraphy in from 1971 to 1980. Likewise, Dr. Hay edited Studies in Paleo -Oceanography in 1974 and served on the editorial boards of the Annual Reviews of Earth Sciences from 1984 to 1989 and Marine Geology from 1975 to 1982.

Outside of his primary trade, Dr. Hay keeps updated of trends in his field through affiliations with numerous related organizations. A fellow of the Geological Society of America he has maintained involvement with the Society for Sedimentary Geology (President 1987-1988) and the American Geophysical Union.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hay was presented with the Best Paper Award by the Gulf Coast section of the Society for Sedimentary Geology in 19 70, also receiving its Francis P. Shepard Medal in 1981 and its Twenhofel Medal in 2006. A research fellow of the University College London from1972 to 1980, he was also the recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Senior Scientist Prize between 1991 and 1992 and the F.C. Donders Professorship from Utrecht University in the Netherlands in I993. Furthermore, Dr. Hay was selected for inclusion in the 13th edition of Who's Who in the World and multiple edit ions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
