After accruing four decades of practiced experience in architecture, Dr. Douglass retired from his role as the principal of Douglass Planning and Architecture. At the beginning of his career, he worked as an associate and a design leader for the Leo A. Daly Company prior to accepting executive roles with Caudill Rowlett Scott, CE Maguire Inc., and Robert Douglass Associates, Inc. Over the years Dr. Douglass has found success in private practice as well as through a number of positions as director, Deloitte & Touche, professor for Rice University, the University of Texas School of Public Health and Texas A&M University, and annual lecturer for the University of Houston, the University of Colorado and the University of Missouri.

A certified healthcare architect through the Academy of Architecture for Health, Dr. Douglass initially earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Nebraska. Subsequently, he obtained a Master of Architecture in hospital planning from the University of Minnesota. He concluded his studies with a Master's degree in design studies and Doctor of Design from Harvard University. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr Douglass has been affiliated with the American Institute of Architects, The American Association of Hospital Planning, the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Society of Hospital Planners.

In his retirement, Dr. Douglass has contributed to his community as a member of the Academy of Architecture for Health. He also established a professorship in architecture at the University of Nebraska and the Douglass Scholarship in Health Care Administration at the University of Minnesota. Utilizing his considerable knowledge, Dr. Douglass authored and edited "Managing the Health Facility Development Process" for the Association University Programs in Healthcare Administration, and contributed to the Aspen Manual for Health Service Management, Facilities Planning and Construction.

Previously, he excelled in a variety of efforts with the University of Nebraska College of Architecture and the University of Minnesota through which he established scholarship programs.

The Charles River Project in Boston, designed by Dr. Douglass with CE Maguire, was presented the Presidential Silver Medal by the National Endowment for the Arts. He additionally accepted a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Nebraska. Looking toward the future, Dr. Douglass intends to continue giving back to his community and enjoying his retirement.
