Dr. Peter W. McKinney was born in Baltimore and raised in Los Angeles and Manhattan, graduating from Blair Academy in Blairstown N.J. in 1952; Harvard College AB, cum Laude in Cambridge, Massachusetts 1956; and MD, CM from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec in 1960 where he served his internship at the Montreal General Hospital. Dr. McKinney is a Professor of Plastic Surgery at both Northwestern University Medical School and Rush University Medical School in Chicago. He began his professional career at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan in 1961 as a resident in general surgery with Professor John Mulholland at New York University surgery division. In 1962 he became a neurosurgery and general surgery resident at Albert Einstein University/Jacobi with Professor Leo Davidoff and from 1964-1967an associate in surgery and chief resident in Plastic Surgery at Cornell Medical Center, New York Hospital with Professor Herbert Conway. During his residency period he was also affiliated with The James J Peters Veterans Affairs Hospital in the Bronx, New York. Dr McKinney had his first attending hospital staff appointment at The New York Hospital in 1967 and was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1968.

Relocating to Chicago, Dr. McKinney was appointed assistant Professor, later Professor, of Plastic Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School with attending staff privileges at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Lakeside Veterans Hospital, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, the Children's Memorial Hospital, and the Shiners' Hospital for Children. During this time he and Dr. B. Harold Griffith founded The Clinic for Plastic Surgery to provide plastic surgery care for low income patients and as a teaching aid for students and residents at Northwestern. Also becoming a professor at Rush- Presbyterian St Luke's later in his career, he taught students and residents at Rush University Medical School as well. Dr. McKinney was in private practice from 1967-2007.

A member of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. McKinney served as an examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery 1976-2007 and as a Director for the American Board of Plastic Surgery (1999-2007). He is a past president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the Illinois Society of Plastic Surgery, a past president of the Chicago Society of Plastic Surgery and a founding member, as well as, a past President of the Rhinoplasty Society. Dr. McKinney has authored five plastic surgery text books and is a former Associate Editor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal 1993-2000 and an Associate Editor of The Year Book of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery 1989-2009. Dr. McKinney has authored over 157 peer reviewed papers between 1964 and 2004, and has made hundreds of formal scientific presentations. The recipient of 37 visiting professorships in The United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, France, Poland and Japan, Dr. McKinney has been previously cited in several Editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. McKinney enjoys sailing, squash, skiing, art and music. As a college student he sang with The Harvard Glee Club, performing Berlioz's Faust with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Charles Munch and G Wallace Woodruff conducting. The performance was recorded live in Symphony Hall in Boston by RCA Victor. He also notably qualified for the finals for the selection to the 1972 United States Olympic Star Sailing Team held in San Francisco Bay in 1972. These races were affectionately dubbed the 'Fire hose' finals by the participants because it blew a steady 40-45 in almost every race. Dr. McKinney is happily married to his wife, Donna McKinney, for many years and is the proud father of two children and grandfather to five.
