Mr. Small has found success as the owner of Small Country Campground, a recreation resort in Louisa, VA, since 1975. A farm resting upon 52 acres of land that was initially utilized as a getaway for his family, the land was subsequently transformed into a 55-site campsite that included a store, a bathhouse, an electric building and a pumphouse. Over the years, the campground has grown significantly, adding 150 more sites, a pool and an 18-hole mini golf course and other amenities. A premier destination in central Virginia, Mr. Small's son Bill and daughter-in-law now manage the business.
Previously, Mr. Small worked as the executive director for the Virginia Campground Association and the Virginia Biotechnology Association. He also held several other administrative positions with organizations across Maryland and Washington, D.C., including as the executive director of the Association of Biotechnology Companies, and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. Mr. Small was additionally active in communications as the editor for the American Pharmacy Journal, the founding editor for Biomedical News, a science writer at the University of Chicago and a reporter for "Science Service" in Washington. In 1971, Mr. Small notably authored a book, titled "Third Pollution." An elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Mr. Small is also a lifetime member of the National Association of Science Writers.
The recipient of a Superior Accomplishment Award by the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1974, Mr. Small has since been highlighted in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, every edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest since 1995 and both the 2015 and 2016 editions of Who's Who in the World. He notably earned an Associate's degree at Jackson Community College in 1959, followed by a Bachelor of Science in geology in 1961 and a Master of Arts in journalism in 1964 at Michigan State University. Mr. Small also served with the security agency in the U.S. Army between 1955 and 1958.
