Michael Daniel Buzash Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Michael Daniel Buzash is a Professor Emeritus who taught Romance Languages at Indiana State University (ISU) for 39 years.

Mr. Buzash is a Professor Emeritus who taught Romance Languages at Indiana State University (ISU) for 39 years. Hired in 1959 and promoted to Assistant Professor and soon after to Associate Professor, he later served in numerous capacities on campus. The Director of the French Honors Program for 17 years between 1980 and 1997, Mr. Buzash also directed the pilot program in French and Spanish Honors between 1981 and 1997. Prior to entering academia, Mr. Buzash taught French, Spanish and English at Lawrence High School in Indiana for five years.

A presenter in his field, Mr. Buzash has also served as a delegate, presenter and chair at numerous international symposia. He also founded and sustains annual French/Spanish scholarships at ISU. Furthermore, he sponsored various clubs and two honoraries and was always attending conferences. Committed to his profession, Mr. Buzash notably never took one sick day during his entire career.

As an author, Mr. Buzash has published poetry in anthologies, several honors program research projects between 1986 and 1998, as well as several articles, book reviews, book chapters and books. He notably contributed to the 1988 book "From Third World to One World" and to "Proceedings of Black Studies Conferences" from 1989 to 1991. He also authored "Exercices Pratiques de Francais Oral, Manuel and Tapes" from 1983 to 1990, "Repetition et Acquisition Pratique" from 1983 to 1995, "Revision Pratique de Francais" from 1980 to 1996, and contributed to "ERIC Database" from 1990 to 1998.

Mr. Buzash is a lifetime member of the Vigo County Historical Society, the Vigo County Education Heritage Association, the American Association of Romanian Studies and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. He is also a charter member of the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association, member and past Treasurer of the Vigo County Retired Teachers Association, member and former Vice-President of the Terre Haute Symphony Association from 1970 to 1972, and member of the Midwest Modern Language Association and the American Translators Association, among other organizations.

Actively involved in his community for many years, Mr. Buzash is a member of the Indianapolis Art Museum and the Swope Art Museum Terre Haute. Named an honorary member of the Hoosiers for Economic Development in 1982, he also served on the Council of the St. George Orthodox Church between 1981 and 1983 and again between 2002 and 2004. Many years earlier, Mr. Buzash served as Vice-President of the Terre Haute Symphony Association.

Mr. Buzash is a Mason and was conferred the Meritorious Service Award in 2018 by the Council of Deliberation, Scottish Rite. He is also a member of York Rite, Zorah Shrine, and Scottish Rite. He has been cited in the 56th through 58th editions of Who's Who in America, seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education, and 18th edition of Who's Who in the World.

Born to Romanian parents, Mr. Buzash grew up in a Romanian Community and Eastern Orthodox Church and learned to love foreign languages. Encouraged by his parents to study French and Spanish, he later decided that he wanted to teach as well. First studying at the University of Mexico in Mexico City in 1952, Mr. Buzash soon after earned a Bachelor of Arts in French and Spanish at Indiana State University in 1953, Master of Arts in Romance languages at Case Western Reserve University in 1960, followed by postgraduate coursework at the University of Wisconsin between 1963 and 1969. He received a Certificate de Stage through Purdue University in 1986, the University of Wisconsin in 1993, Michigan State University in 1994 and the University of Illinois in 1995. He also received a certified superior rating in French and Spanish through the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in 1986.
