With more than 35 years in higher education to his credit, Dr. Bonnett has become an authority in his field and currently holds the title of professor emeritus at SUNY Old Westbury, where he previously served as a professor of American studies, vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty. In his position, he holds research interests in transnationalism, remittances, development, and race and ethnic relations in developing politics. Prior to this appointment, he served as dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and professor of sociology at California State University, San Bernardino. At the inception of his career, he was active as the deputy executive officer of the PhD Program in Sociology at the Graduate School and University Center and a fellow in academic administration at the City University of New York. Later in his career, he excelled as the chairman of the sociology department, professor of sociology and presidential intern in the Office of the Provost at Hunter College. In addition, Dr. Bonnett was appointed a seminar associate at Columbia University from 1982 to 1985.
Prior to becoming a successful educator, Dr. Bonnett pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and political science, magna cum laude, from Inter-American University in Puerto Rico. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in political sociology and development from the University of Alberta in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the City University of New York in 1976, where he was the first black graduate in the Ph.D. program. In 1988, he received a certificate in higher education and administration from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
Outside of his career, Dr. Bonnett enjoys theater, spectator sports, and studying black history. Dr. Bonnett is proud to be the first black dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at California State University, San Bernardino. He was mentored and influenced by Nelson N. Foote, Hugh Smythe, Wendell Bell, Professor Hylan Lewis and Benjamin Ringer, among other prominent inspirations in the academic and political worlds.
In light of his expertise in the field, Dr. Bonnett has contributed to a number of published works, including "Institutional Adaptation of West Indian Immigrants to America: An Analysis of Rotating Credit Associations" and "Group Identification Among Negroes: An Examination of the Soul Concept in the U.S.A." He also co-authored "Continuing Perspectives on the Black Diaspora" and "Emerging Perspectives on the Black Diaspora." Dr. Bonnett has additionally contributed various chapters to books and articles to professional journals.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Bonnett remains aware of the changes and advancements in his field through related organizations. He is a member of the American Association for Higher Education, the American Sociological Association, the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences, and the Caribbean Studies Association. Dr. Bonnett also sat on the board of directors for the Home of Neighborly Services in San Bernardino, California, from 1987 to 1989 and the board of directors of 100 Black Men of Long Island from 1996 to 1997.
In light of his expertise in his field, Dr. Bonnett has received a number of accolades throughout his career. He was named an Honor Scholar by the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation in 1966 and awarded a postdoctoral grant in social sciences from the Social Science Research Council in 1977. In recognition of his many achievements in the field, Dr. Bonnett was featured in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the West in 1992.
