With years of practiced industry experience to her credit, Dr. Gatto currently works as a professor at John Carroll University, where she has also served as an assistant professor of modern languages and cultures, an associate professor and the first woman chairman of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Cultures. Over the years, she has notably founded the women and gender studies program at John Carroll University and has also served as the temporary director of the honors program. Additionally, Dr. Gatto has authored a number of books, including Treasury of Hungarian Love, Poems, Quotations and Proverbs and Spain's Literary Legacy: Studies in Spanish Literature and Culture from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century, and co-authored others, such as Of Kings and Poets: Cancionero Poetry of the Trastámara Courts, Manual terapéutico para el adulto con dificultades del habla y lenguaje, and an English edition translated from the Spanish: The Lapidary of King Alfonso X, the Learned. She has also published more than fifty articles, essays, encyclopedia entries, translations, and book reviews in academic journals on the topics of Hispanic (Spain, Latin America, United States) literature and film, and Hungarian and Hungarian-American literature and film. She is particularly honored to have published an annotated translation of the poem "Napnyugati Kantáta" (Occidental Cantata) written by her older brother, the Hungarian-American poet György Gyékényesi (1932-1973), in The Multilingual Anthology of American Literature, edited by Marc Shell and Werner Sollors, Longfellow Institute, Harvard University and published by New York University Press. She has also delivered seventy-five conference papers and talks throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe related to the aforementioned topics. In 2001, she was the winner of the Lucrecia Culicchia Award for Teaching Excellence in the College of Arts and Sciences.
An expert in her field, Dr. Gatto pursued an education at John Carroll University, initially earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude. She continued her studies with a Master of Arts at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Gatto later concluded her academic efforts at Case Western Reserve University, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
In order to remain current in her field, Dr. Gatto has been affiliated with the Modern Language Association, the American Association for Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, the American Hungarian Educators Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, the Árpád Academy of the Hungarian Association and many others. Due to her outstanding work, she has accepted fellowships from Case Western Reserve University, Fulbright-Hays and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Looking toward the future, Dr. Gatto intends to experience the continued success of her career at John Carroll University.
