Now a professor emeritus of electrical engineering, Dr. Chowdhuri celebrates a career in engineering and academia that has spanned 60 years. Beginning his career in 1948 as a student apprentice at Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation in Calcutta, India, he soon after acquired a position as a junior engineer at Westinghouse Electrical Corporation in East Pittsburgh in 1952. Relocating to Switzerland, he became an electrical engineer in the High Voltage Laboratory of Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon in Zurich and a research engineer for the High Voltage Research Commission. Returning to the United States in 1956, over the next two decades, Dr. Chowdhuri worked for several great organizations, including General Electric (GE) as an engineer in electrical investigations and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he later retired in 1986 as a staff member, assistant program manager and head of the electrical engineering section of the D.C. superconducting power transmission line program.

Upon retiring from his field, Dr. Chowdhuri pursued a career in academia. As a professor of electrical engineering at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, he taught for 19 years in the Center for Electric Power, retiring in 2005. Dr. Chowdhuri formerly lectured part-time at the Behrend College Graduate Center at Pennsylvania State University between 1969 and 1975 while working for GE. He also notably served as president of the Los Alamos Bus System, Inc., was on the utilities board of Los Alamos County, was the executive secretary of the New Mexico Association of Memorial Societies and was president of the Memorial Society of Northern New Mexico.

As a seasoned engineer, Dr. Chowdhuri obtained four patents between 1965 and 1974. He also authored "Electromagnetic Transients in Power Systems" in 1996 and was a section editor the "Electric Power Engineering Handbook" through CRC Press during 2000.

An alumnus of the University of Calcutta, Dr. Chowdhuri has held a Bachelor of Science in physics, with honors, since 1945 and a Master of Science in applied physics since 1948. He later acquired a Master of Science in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1951 and a Doctor of Engineering in engineering science from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1966. Dr. Chowdhuri is a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Dr. Chowdhuri has maintained memberships with numerous professional organizations throughout his career, including the Tennessee Academy of Science and the American National Standards Institute. He was also president of the Thanatopsis Society of Erie. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Science and the Institution of Electrical Engineers of Great Britain, Dr. Chowdhuri is also a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), where he has served on over a dozen committees.

Honored with multiple awards, Dr. Chowdhuri received several paper awards from the IEEE and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, an Invention Disclosure Award from Westinghouse Electrical Corporation and a Tennessee Board of Regents Distance Education Committee Innovation Award. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Chowdhuri has been featured in close to 60 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
