Judith Wagner DeCew, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A celebrated philosophy professor of more than 40 years, Dr. DeCew is a now a senior research scholar and professor emerita at Clark University. Beginning her career in education as a high school mathematics teacher for three years, she then decided to go back to school to pursue a master's degree and ultimately was invited to join the PhD program. Once Dr. DeCew graduated, she became an assistant professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978. Nine years later, she accepted her first appointment at Clark University, remaining on campus until retirement.

During Dr. DeCew's tenure at the university, she worked her way up to full professor, served as the associate dean of the college and chaired the philosophy department for over 10 years. Teaching upper level courses in Theories of Ethics, Philosophy of Law, and Social and Political Philosophy, she also offered an introductory course in Social and Political Ethics and a first-year seminar in Privacy Protection in Law and Ethics. Further, she was affiliated with the university's programs in Women and Gender Studies and Law and Society and directed the Ethics and Public Policy concentration. Her research focuses on topics in theoretical and applied ethics, philosophy of law, social and political philosophy, and logic.

Dr. DeCew was a visiting professor of philosophy at Wellesley College and Harvard University. She has been a research fellow at Harvard Law School, The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (formerly known as the Bunting Institute at Radcliffe College) and Harvard University and has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies and the American Association of University Women. Dr. DeCew received the Hayden Faculty Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching and Research from Clark University in 1993 and the Senior Faculty Fellowship Award for the Clark Ideal of Excellence in Teaching and Research in 2010.

In 1995, Dr. DeCew edited and co-authored her first book, "Theory and Practice: Nomos XXXVII" (New York University Press). She soon after authored "In Pursuit of Privacy: Law, Ethics and the Rise of Technology" in 1997 (Cornell University Press) and "Unionization in the Academy: Visions and Realities" in 2003 (Rowman & Littlefield). Dr. DeCew has contributed more than 60 articles to various professional journals including the Journal of Philosophical Logic, Ethics and Philosophical Studies.

An alumnus of the University of Rochester, Dr. DeCew has held a Bachelor of Arts since 1970. She also attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she completed both a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1976 and 1978, respectively.

Dr. DeCew maintained membership with several professional organizations, including the American Association of University Professors and the Committee on Law and Philosophy with the American Philosophical Association. Locally, she has served as president of the Peirce Extended Day Program in Newton, Massachusetts, and the Cabot After School Program in Newton. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. DeCew is cited in the fourth edition of Who's Who in American Education and the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
