Gail Rice Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

In light of her many contributions to the field, Ms. Rice has received several accolades throughout her career.

    PALOS HEIGHTS, IL, July 30, 2019 -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Gail Rice with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Rice celebrates many years' experience in her professional network and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. More than 45 years in education and consulting has made Ms. Rice an expert in her field. Since 1998, she has been serving as a consultant at the Adult Learning Resource Center in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Previously, she excelled as an adult basic education teacher at the Urbana Adult Education Center from 1972 to 1979, an adjunct faculty member at the National College of Education at National Louis University from 1980 to 1981, and an adult basic education volunteer tutor and trainer at South Suburban College from 1979 to 2005. She was active as a literacy consultant for the Christian Reformed Church in North America from 1994 to 2004, a consultant for University Outreach and Extension at the University of Missouri from 2001 to 2007, and a substitute teacher at Olive-Harvey College in Chicago from 2007 to 2008. She has presented numerous workshops on a wide variety of literacy topics for local, state, and national organizations throughout the last 40 years. Mr. Rice presently volunteers as a tutor at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Park, Illinois and at the PACE Institute at Cook County Jail in Chicago, where she has tutored since 1979.

Prior to becoming an esteemed educator, Ms. Rice pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education in vocational home economics from the University of Illinois in 1971 and 1972, respectively. She is a certified teacher in the state of Illinois. Ms. Rice has authored a number of works, including the "Focus on phonics" series from 1976 to 1985, "Preparing Your Own Adult Basic Education Reading Materials" in 1990 and "Northern Illinois Gas Serves You with Energy" in 1993. She co-authored "Safe Driving in Illinois" in 1978 and "Creating a Quality Basic Literacy Program: A Guide for Churches" in 2001. She contributed to the "Glencoe Essentials of Reading" series from 1997 to 1998, and "Passing the GED" and "Springboard for Passing GED Test of Interpreting Literature and the Arts" in 1987. Ms. Rice has also edited, authored, and contributed to several books and professional publications.

Apart from her career, Ms. Rice has volunteered in her field and community. She was a volunteer instructor for Prison Fellowship, a committee member and member of Stephen Ministries at the Hope Christian Reformed Church, a conference planner and newsletter editor at Christian Laity of Chicago, Inc., and a newsletter editor and community impact speaker at the Cook County Juvenile Probation Department. From 1999 to the present, she has served on the PACE Board of Managers Advisory Committee, and from 2009 to 2016 she served on the Christian Reformed Church's Safe Church Ministry's (abuse prevention) advisory committee. For several years she has been a speaker and consultant on death penalty abolition (she helped repeal Illinois' death penalty) and restorative justice (she helped organize two restorative justice conferences).

Outside of her professional responsibilities, Ms. Rice remains informed of the changes and advancements in her industry through relevant organizations. She is a member of the Authors Guild, the Coalition on Adult Basic Education, the International Literacy Association, the Illinois Adult and Continuing Educators Association, ProLiteracy, and the Center for Plain Language. Likewise, she is associated with Murder Victims' Families for Human Rights, the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice, and Toastmasters International.

In light of her many contributions to the field, Ms. Rice has received several accolades throughout her career. She received the Studs Terkel Humanities Award in 2004 and the Spotlight on Service Award from the Illinois Secretary of State's Office in 1998. Ms. Rice was also named a Tutor of the Year by Literacy Volunteers of America-Illinois in 1998. She received two Dedicated Service Awards from Safer Foundation in 2015 and 2016, and a service award from the Illinois Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty in 2011. In 2019 she earned the Competent Communicator award from Toastmasters International. Ms. Rice has been featured in the fifth and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education, as well as in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.
