A renowned pediatric hematologist-oncologist, Dr. van Eys celebrates more than 50 years in medicine. Retiring as a clinical professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2006, he served in that capacity for 12 years. Dr. van Eys' noteworthy roles as a medical doctor also included positions at the John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas at Houston as a David R. Park professor of pediatrics and department chairman, and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he taught and chaired the department of experimental pediatrics and the department of pediatrics. Dr. van Eys originally joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University in 1969 as both an assistant and associate professor of biochemistry and chief of the pediatric hematology clinic, where he focused on an active program of both research and clinical practice.

During his career, Dr. van Eys lent his expertise as a consultant for the Cancer Information Services for Code Ethics and Pediatric Cancers between 1986 and 1989. He has published articles, abstracts, papers and book chapters extensively in the fields of medical ethics, oncology and biochemistry. He has also served as a reviewer, consultant and associate editor for several publications and continues to serve as a consultant editor for "The Pharos" since 1994. In addition to his published works, Dr. van Eys has been active at many workshops, clinical and mental health conferences, and annual symposiums.

First studying in his home country of the Netherlands, Dr. van Eys made his way to the United States to study biochemistry at Vanderbilt University, where he received a Doctor of Philosophy in 1955. After teaching at the university for a few years, he left to pursue a Doctor of Medicine, which he earned at the University of Washington in 1966. Other educational pursuits included a postdoctoral fellowship at the McCollum-Pratt Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore from 1955 to 1957 and an internship and residency in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Hospitals from 1966 to 1969. Dr. van Eys is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology.

Dr. van Eys is locally active as a lifetime member of the Tennessee Hemophilia and Bleeding Disorders Foundation and Miriam's Promise, an adoption and counseling agency in Nashville. He also served on and later chaired the board of the Wesley Fellowship at Vanderbilt University. He served on the administrative board of Alive Hospice in Nashville. He is still active on the Advisory Board of that agency and serves on several administrative board committees. Dr. van Eys is a past president of the board of trustees of the Institute of Religion in Houston, previously served on the administrative board of Westbury United Methodist Church in Houston, was on the board of directors of the McKendree Senior Care Corporation in Nashville and the National Hemophilia Foundation, and was chairman of Health and Welfare of the Tennessee Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served as chair of the Fellowship Committee of the American Cancer Society.

Dr. van Eys is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Nutrition, past president of the Houston Pediatric Society and member of multiple other professional organizations. Some of these memberships included the American Pediatric Society, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Medical Writers Association, and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. van Eys has been featured in every edition of Who's Who in America between 1990 and 2005, the fifth and sixth editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and every edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest between 2001 and 2011.
