Dr. Hudnut-Beumler is a Presbyterian minister and the Anne Potter Wilson Distinguished Professor of American Religious History at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, with which he has served since 2000. The child of a minister, Dr. Hudnut-Beumler developed an early interest in history. He attended the College of Wooster, graduating in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts. Dr. Hudnut-Beumler earned a Master of Divinity at the Union Theological Seminary of New York in 1983, and completed his education at Princeton University with a Master of Arts in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1989.

From 1988 to 1991, Dr. Hudnut-Beumler was an undergraduate administrative director and a lecturer in public and international affairs at Princeton University. He became a program officer for the Lilly Endowment, Incorporated, of Indianapolis in 1991, returning to academia in 1993 as a dean and professor of religion and culture at Columbia Theological Seminary of Decatur, Georgia. Dr. Hudnut-Beumler joined the Vanderbilt University Divinity School in 2000, with which he garnered a laudable reputation as a dean until 2013, and where he continues to teach American religious history.

Dr. Hudnut-Beumler's research focus is on the historiography of religion in the American South and on the use of extratextual sources in religious studies. Among other works, he is the author of "Strangers and Friends at the Welcome Table: Contemporary Christianities in the American South," published in 2018, "In Pursuit of the Almighty Dollar: A History of Money and American Protestantism," released in 2007, and "Looking for God in the Suburbs: The Religion of the American Dream and its Critics, 1945-1965," published in 1994. Dr. Hudnut-Beumler is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the American Society of Church History, and the Organization of American Historians.
