Dr. Wilkens is renowned as a research scientist who specializes in mammals and fish remains and marine and terrestrial mollusk shells. Between 1993 and 2018, she worked as a researcher and an educator at the University of Sassari in Italy, where she taught within the departments of history, nature and environmental sciences and veterinary medicine and notably taught the course of archaeozoology for natural sciences and management of environment and territory. Dr. Wilkens currently excels as an independent researcher in Alghero and Sassari.

A seasoned scientist, Dr. Wilkens has conducted extensive research in the faunal remains of Holocene from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages in the Mediterranean area and the Near East. She has also completed research in mammals, fish and mollusks coming from archaeological excavations, the faunal remains of Tell Afis, Syria, as well as remains from other sites of the Near East, Greece and the Italian Peninsula and Sardinia. As a result of her studies, Dr. Wilkens has been widely published, having authored or co-authored dozens of peer reviewed articles in such publications as the Italian Journal of Mammalogy and Scientific Reports.

In 2017, Dr. Wilkens served as an organizer for the 19th Fish Remains Working Group Meeting in Alghero. In 1991, she was appointed by the Archaeological Superintendence of Liguria Cure Exposure and Window Dressing of Faunal Remains in the new museum of the Balzi Rossi in Ventimiglia, Italy. In 1981, Dr. Wilkens was commissioned by the Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali and the municipality of Lucca, where she curated the layout of the Museum of Natural History of the Liceo Machiavelli Lucca, which included the revision of the catalog and the exhibition of the malacological collection.

Dr. Wilkens initially pursued an education at the University of Pisa in Pisa, Italy, earning a Doctor of Arts in 1982 and a Doctor of Philosophy in archaeology in 1987. She concluded her studies with coursework in osteometry and in the study of Ichthyofauna from archaeological sites at the Centre de Recherches Archéologiques of Sophia Antipolis in Valbonne, France. A founding member of the Italian Association of Archaeozoology, Dr. Wilkens is also a member of the International Council for Archaeozoology.

In 1993, Dr. Wilkens was honored as the winner of a competition for a research position at the University of Sassari within the faculty of literature and philosophy for the institute of antiquities, art and ethnological disciplines. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been featured in the 28th through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World.
