With 30 years of experience to his credit, Naonobu Takahira, MD, PhD, has excelled at Kitasato University as a professor in the Graduate School of Medical Science and a professor in the department of rehabilitation at the School of Allied Health Sciences since 2007. During this time, he worked as the head of the department of orthopaedic surgery in the Treatment Center for Neurological and Locomotion Disease at the East Hospital for Kitasato University from 2007 to 2014. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Takahira served as a full-time lecturer at the Kitasato University Graduate School of Medical Science from 2004 to 2007 and the chief of the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Kitasato University Hospital from 2002 to 2004.

Previously, Dr. Takahira held the position of a full-time lecturer at the Kitasato University School of Medicine in the department of orthopaedic surgery from 2000 to 2002 and the department of emergency medicine from 1998 to 2000. He was additionally active on the medical staff for the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Kitasato University Hospital from 1991 to 1998. Dr. Takahira began his career as a resident in the department of orthopaedic surgery at Kitasato University Hospital from 1989 to 1991.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Takahira pursued an education at the Kitasato University School of Medicine, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1989. He concluded his studies at Kitasato University School of Medicine in 1998, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. Throughout his academic efforts, Dr. Takahira focused his research on venous thromboembolism, deep venous thrombosis, coxarthrosis and orthopedic trauma, sports medicine and rehabilitation, bone allograft and joint implants and cartilage metabolism and hyaluronan.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Takahira has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has held the role of a councilor for the Eastern Japan Association of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, the Japanese Society for Technology Arthroplasty, the Japanese Society for Musculoskeletal Medicine, the Yokohama Sports Orthopedic Forum and the International Biotribology Forum. Moreover, he contributed to the Japanese Hip Society as a member of the research committee for the epidemiology of coxarthrosis in 2006, a councilor in 2007 and the chairperson of the social insurance committee in 2016. Dr. Takahira further flourished with the Japanese Society for Fracture Repair as a member of multiple committees and a councilor.

Dr. Takahira found much success as an advisory editor for the Journal of Joint Surgery in 2011, the Journal of Venous Thromboembolism in 2011 and the Journal of Orthopedics Surgical Technique in 2017. He provided his expertise to the editorial boards for BMJ Open and the Journal of Orthopaedic Science in 2010. In 2005, he held the post of an observer for the Anatomy Model Project of Medicine-Related Death for the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Dr. Takahira has notably prospered within the Japanese Orthopaedic Association as a member of the committee for the planning of the clinical guidelines for coxarthrosis in 2006, the chairperson of the academic term committee in 2016 and the chairperson of the social insurance committee in 2017.

In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Takahira remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained his involvement with the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, the Japan College of Rheumatology and the Japan Tennis Association, for which he offered his wealth of knowledge to their medical committee in 2002. He was also associated with the Japanese Society of Phlebology, the Japan Surgical Society, the Japanese Society of Cartilage Metabolism, the Japanese Society for Joint Diseases and the Japanese Orthopaedic Society of Knee Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine. Furthermore, Dr. Takahira was a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie and Deutsch-Japanische Tagung Fur Orthopadie.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Takahira has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Accepting multiple Best Paper Awards from the Kanagawa Orthopaedics and Traumatology Society and the Society for Tennis Medicine and Science, he was recognized with President Awards from the Kitasato University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Alumni Association in 1998 and 2003, the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association in 2007 and the Japanese Physical Therapy Association in 2008. He was presented with a Young Scientist Award from the Eastern Japan Association of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 2005, the Highest Award from the Japanese Physical Therapy Association in 2011, the Taisho Toyama Award from the Japanese Hip Society in 2016, the Jacques Duparc Award from the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Tramatology in 2017 and the Special Encouragement Award from Kitasato University in 2018. Likewise, Dr. Takahira was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of the eighth edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the 12th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.

Inspired by Shibasaburo Kirasato, a pioneer in his industry who was nominated for the first annual Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1901, Dr. Takahira attributes his success to his development of a minimally-invasive surgery method for total hip replacement, the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism, and the prevention and treatment of bad posture. Drawing additional gratification from his efforts to prevent musculoskeletal diseases and extend healthy life expectancy, he is incredibly proud of his medical treatments and prevention utilizing robots and artificial intelligence. Dr. Takahira is particularly fascinated about the evolution of medical technology and surgical techniques, which continue to blossom alongside innovative advances in artificial intelligence and work style reform.

Currently, Dr. Takahira holds 12 domestic patents with 14 patents pending for orthopedic surgical instruments and technology for motor rehabilitation for athletes, venous thromboembolism prevention and nursing. A multilingual figure in his field, he has appeared on television many times and conducted work as a medical supervisor for television dramas. Looking toward the future, Dr. Takahira hopes to thrive in global medical equipment development, the reproduction of doctor skills and precision in medical equipment, and the practice of digital medicine while ascending to a greater administrative position at Kitasato University.
